Can I buy and install a car battery myself?

I know generally how to install a car battery. My plan was to buy a battery for cheaper on my own, and then replace my dead one myself. I know there is an extra bolt that secures the battery as well as that "plug" on the side.

I have a 2005 E320 4Matic. Someone cautioned me that while I can replace it myself, I don't possess the computer tools a dealer or a 3rd party MB repair place has, so I won't be able to complete the job because certain computer "things" have to be reset, etc.

Is this correct? If I am willing to replace the battery myself, can I do the operation as intended, or can only an authorized MB repair place (or ones with the MB tools) complete the job?

Thanks for any insight out there.

Why not? What you need is a 10mm socket and a strong arm.

I've disconnected both terminals on mine several times to work on electrical stuff and everything was fine upon reinstalling. Should be plug and play and a 10 minute job tops.

I've taken mine out so I could bring it home to charge it after leaving the lights on. But if you buy the battery from an auto parts store like Advance Auto or Autozone, they will install the battery for free. Pepboys used to do it for free, but now they charge. Check retailmenot.com for any discount codes, Advance Auto typically has a 30% off code and Autozone 20%. Some say you need to normalize the car afterwards, but I believe you can do that yourself, open and close all windows holding the button open or closed for an extra 5 seconds, same with the sunroof and depending on year, turn steering wheel from lock to lock. If you do it yourself or have someone else do it, always disconnect the negative cable first, then then the positive, and reconnect positive first, then negative. Reasoning is that if you touch the body while disconnecting the cable, sparks will fly if you do the positive first, but nothing will happen when doing the negative cable. Once the negative is disconnected, connecting positive to the body won't result in any sparks.

Sure you can. It's a 10 min. job. The MB service manual steps have been posted here before. Follow the above poster's steps. The most you may need to do is re-sync the sunroof, windows.

10 minutes?
That would give 1 minute for opening the trunk lid
1 minute for pulling the carpeting
1 minute to give negative clamp bolt 1 turn and pull the clamp
1 minute to give positive clamp bolt 1 turn and pull the clamp
2 minutes to unbolt the side brackets.
1 minute to pull the battery out.
That still leave me 3 minutes and I calculated snail job.

You skipped the part about finding the toolbox, getting the right socket. Finding the socket after you drop it. Then carrying the battery home with some breaks if it's a long walk as it's a heavy battery.

LOL some of you guys are being funny. However you don't need to worry about the MB with the battery reset or anything like what BMW is, since BMW is a PITA with battery reset and have to be programmed. So thank goodness for MB don't have that for their cars.

2008 E320 Bluetec
MY 2008 Bluetec had an AGM battery, and had 1 or 2 vapor capture tubes connected to the top that came out and back in easily.
