I remember getting a fibre loop as well and reconfiguring it to be an extension that linked the fibre connector on the Mr 12Volt to the fibre cable in the MB. There wasn't any connection to a box in the trunk. My steering wheel phone buttons and audio buttons work properly. I never had an issue with them.
