09 E350 4Matic, does it have a front differential or front tranfer case?
My goals is to replace "front" end fluids/oil..... I have already replaced the transmission fluid (very easy) and have spare ATF 4134
I am confused about what my car actually has up front. Does it have a transfer case or a front differential? Which one is serviceable fluid drain/fill for the home mechanic?
....check my logic/thinking...... Or does it have both? ATF 4134 for the transfer case and seperate Gear oil for the front differential?

The transfer case is at the rear of the transmission, which connects to the front driveshaft. The driveshaft goes to the front differential. The transfer case is lubricated by transmission fluid. The diff is a separate system and fluid, like the rear diff, requires it's own changes.

Thanks for the info.
I can figure out the front and rear differential fluid change (will have to figure out if 85w90 or 75w85 gear oil is used) looks DIY friendly.
But the transfer case fluid change looks too complicated for me for now. I believe that changing the transmission fluid does not change the transfer case.
I will do one fluid change at a time for now.
that is the guide I am referring to for the TC

I believe transfer case and differential fluids are both different. When I did mine, I just got the MB fluids as there didn't seem to be any aftermarket fluids that meet spec readily available.

Transfer case fluid on cars is regular ATF as it has regular clutches for the front/rear split, similar friction material to what's inside your trans so it needs the same lubrication and friction modifiers.

Interesting read. If I understand things correctly, the transfer case and the transmission use the same fluid and use a system of self regulating valves/supply lines that keep a balance of volume in the transfer case. They do "mix" per se, but draining the transmission pan obviously does not drain the transfer case.
