CDI mileage? Mine not so hot
Love my car. 2200 miles with 70%city and 30% highway. Only averaging 24 or 25 mpg. Normal? I do not drive with a lead foot, I have other cars for that.
Are my expectation just too high?

Remember the difference between US and imperial gallon will play a part in reducing that number from previously published figures from other parts of the world.

1. Break-in. I've heard for Diesel engines, the break-in just begins at 10,000 miles
2. What do you have the transmission set at comfort Vs. sport? Comfort will defintely increase your mileage however it may feel sluggish
3. Even in city driving I am managaing 28MPG. Try keeping the revs below 3k rpm and you will see a major difference. Highway I'm getting close to 33mpg with 1500 miles on the odometer in my new 320CDI.
Hope this helps

Most of my driving is highway (70 mph on cruise control) and I have been getting 35.5 - 37.5 mpg. The car has about 7000 miles on it. I've noticed there is a definite difference in mileage depending on whether you are driving with the prevailing wind or against it. I do a lot of north - south driving and this time of year in Texas the wind is usually from the south. I consistently get better mileage when northbound.

Mileage in a diesel is better than a spark ignition when they are both operated at part throttle. The diesel responds by injecting less fuel. The spark engine by forcing the the engine to suck air past a small opening.
If your city driving is stop and go with bursts of acceleration, than mid-20s is probably about right. In a similar circumstance, a spark ignition engine will probably be in the mid-teens.
Highway driving at US-legal or quasi-legal speeds (55-85 mph) should be in the low-to-mid thirties. And yes, soft-pedaling could yield more. However, why buy a $60k car to soft-pedal?

Temperature seems to make quite a difference too, I have noticed my fuel consumption worsening as the weather gets colder. Once the engine is at normal termp then the consumption is ok, but doing short distances in cold weather really hurts, I think more than it affects petrol engines.

Temperature is key. I found that on a daily commute of 5 miles the MPG was relatively poor and this is becasue the engine hardly had time to warm up.
On a 20 minute trip or more I now get 38mpg and I have a lead foot! Thats UK gallons by the way.
It has also got better as the car has got older.
If you get anything in the 20's on a run then you have a problem.
At 60-70 mph on a run I can see low 40's easy.

I agree. It was taking about 11 miles to get to full temp when I got my car in March. Now the weather is a little better!!, it heats up in 8.
