E500 windshield wiper arms - prop up from windshield

Has anyone figured this out? Couldn't find it in my manual:

When you want to wash the front windshield, how do you prop up the windshield wiper arms. On my E500 the wiper arms can be pulled up only so far - and then they rub up against the hood extension (looks like it would damage the finish if I were to pull up any farther).

On my previous car E430 - you pulled up on the wiper arms until they clicked into place out of the way of the windshield. What am I missing here?

Thanks for your assistance.

It's in the manual under "replacing the wiper blades."

well could somebody post what it says? The S Class is the same way and when I clean my friends I have to turn them on and turn off the car when they are in the mid sweep so i can prop them up. Otherwise they just get in my way.

It says that the wiper arms must be in the vertical position before you pull them out to extend them. As for washing, I simply pull them up just a little and get my mitt in between. Works fine.

I agree with Puzzi. Simply pick 'em up just enough to get your other hand under. Trying to stop them in the vertical position is a pain.

Thank you for your replies - I was hoping that I was missing something. Kind of crude way of doing this seeing as the windshield might be dirty - activating the wipers on a dry windshield would seem to be a recipe for scratching the glass. Oh well I'll just do as suggested and continue to simply carefully lift up the wipers to clean.

One of my concerns is that we have these 'squeegee kids' all over the city - I can just picture one of them grabbing the wiper and pulling on it to clean the windshield at a stop light - expecting it to swing out and latch like most cars' wipers do.

A 9mm should alleviate this "concern"
