W211 Engine sound, and hello! Questions!
Hi Guys!
I am glad to have joined the MB community. I had been an E39 BMW owner since 2007 and had sold my BMW a while ago. Main reason for getting into the MB community was because of having the third row seat. I am a dad, doctor in training (291 days left and I will be an attending!) and an avid car enthusiast. I like doing most of my stuff on my own. I purchased a 2004 E320 wagon with 174k that had been sitting since 2016. (I got it for $1500) It had blown rear shocks and several other things. Rebuilt title but I found pictures of the accident that deemed it "salvaged" it was basically front and rear bumpers came off. Nonetheless, I have done several things and have gotten it in pretty good condition thus far. I just need to remove all the damn pitch.

So far here is what I have done
1) New battery
2) New aux battery
3) Rear arnott air shocks
4) Rear Sachs struts (I created a simple tool that does the job effectively without the need for pliers, will share if interested.)
5) New compressor
6) Oil change
Stuff that I will be changing:
7) Brake fluid bleed (tomorrow)
8) Filter changes (tomorrow)
10) Belt tensioner
11) Idler pulley
Stuff I am unsure of and questions
12) The car vibrates with it being in gear.
13) The key on one of them will unlock but will not lock. It is driving me nuts.
14) Backup camera
15) Valve cover gasket at some point in the future.
16) is it worth spending more $ on this car?
please see tally
The breaks are no E39 M brakes, but they're a little off. Even in comparison to my accord. It is squishy feeling.

I want to thank you all in advance and appreciate your help!

This place is a joke.
I'm sure with that mileage your engine and trans. mounts are shot.
Research the SBC braking system as to most likely why your pedal feels spongy, likely normal. You need a pressure bleeder to flush the brake fluid, and MB's star diagnosis system (or aftermarket equivalent) to do it 'right.'
You have 220 S-class wheels on your wagon, just FYI.
The car is probably only worth $1500-$2500

Also thanks for letting me know about the wheels. It has brand new Michelin Defenders on there...

Shlt, for $1500-2500 I'll buy it and I already have one. Trying to decide whether or not to invest more time/money into it based on its resale value is a fools errand. What are you going to replace it with? Personally I would rather put a few hundred into this car to get it sorted instead of dumping it to and start all over with another $1500-2500 car. Have you seen used car prices these days?
Yes it needs engine mounts (buy Lemforders, $100 each), valve cover gaskets at $20/each at the dealer (don't get aftermarket), key is $250 dealer only again. Yes I think it's worth it but only you can decide if it's worth it for you. If you going to sell it for the $1500-2500 mentioned above, DM me.

I have a 2015 accord and a 2012 expedition as well! Yeah I like it a lot. I think it needs an Android HU. I'm a little weary because my e39 with 170k was going to ****s. I have no check engine lights on this car. Runs smooth when it's in gear. Has the classic whine which hopefully will go away with the idler pulley and tensioner.
I bought it as a challenge car. Never done suspension work before. This was pretty damn easy. Hell of a lot easier to work on than the BMW. Also not having a mechanical fan in the engine bay helps a lot.
I don't know man, I'm just kind of maxing out on it and it's just too nice for it to have gone wasted. It was owned by some rich folks who have a home here and another country. So rather than deal with it they went off to their home for 6 months and came back to just buy another car and let this thing sit. It has the clunking over bumps in the front but the sway bar links are on order.
I enjoy the way it drives but miss the tech of my newer cars. I especially miss a backup camera.

When I finished with the car my wife was was dumbfounded how quickly I finished. Prior to this I had a project e60 that was so far gone I had to part it out. Then donate the shell to karz4kids.
I will find a good HU. Thanks!

So I replaced the tensioner and the idler pulley. That whining noise and clickety clack is still there. The clickety clack is from the tensioner clicking away. Any suggestions would be amazing please. (PS fluid is full btw)

Those engines also suffer from PCV leaks. Pull the belt off, if the noise is still there it isn't in your belt drive.
Alternator bearing failures are somewhat common, not super often but enough. Stethoscope or a long screwdriver will help you narrow down the source.
