hi everyone I'm new to mb forum and have owned my mercedes w211 2005 e320 sport for around 10 years now.
I was driving today when sudenly the abs check brake came up on the dash also the power steering went stiff as if there was no assistance from the power steering. ive got quite a extensive understanding on cars but not a huge deal lol. I always maintain my car such as major service, oil cooler seals, gearbox oil brake fluid etc.
so I plugged in my autel diagnostic today and pulled these codes
No CAN message is received from the control module 'N47-5 (ESP,Speed-sensitive Power Steering (SPS/PML) and brake Assist System (BAS) control module)".
Check the component "L6/2 (Right front speed sensor).
Check the control module "N82(bcm'
red battery light stays constantly on even when codes cleared, checked battery voltage when engine off reading 12.8 when car on reads around 13.9-14.5v cleaned grounds on battery and bcm module to car body
checked all wires for splits or bad connections as well as all fuses are fine
I can't seem to figure out if I have a faulty esp module or maybe the abs code is causing no CAN communication . when checking live data all 4 sensors give a reading showing all sensors are working fine.
ive removed the esp module today to check if any pins had corrosion or rust but all seemed fine
I really don't know what to do this cars my pride and joy and has achieved 191k without missing a beat please help
I do have a code for a bad gearbox selector which I haven't got round to changing but don't see this to be the issue I tried checking eBay for one but cannot find one with same part number anywhere. the code at the bottom just keeps coming back
Battery control module going is pretty common on these cars, sorta like having to replacing the alternator/voltage regulator. Same with the speed sensor, a bunch of times it's not even the speed, but the magnetic ring that rusts out and/or it's either too far in or out. MB parts only for the ring/sensor. Not sure about your other problems, doesn't really seem like it's SBC related which would be covered under a 25 year extended warranty from MB.
I had similar issue on my car, steering would go stiff when the abs light came to cluster. Also had a code from the front right sensor, air gap being too big. It did show speed just fine, so I replaced the magnetic ring to the hub and it fixed the issue.
UPDATE: ive ordered a esp control module with same part numbers hopefully that should fix the issue,
later today when I get home from work ill check the front right abs sensor for any split wires etc, when I check live data for abs sensors all of them give a good reading
its very strange as ive changed both batteries front (auxiliary) and rear (main) Ive also changed the battery control module as well as alternator but still keep getting the same message

Are you sure you got the right part numbers? Did you look up the correct part in EPC? Also lots of times aftermarket alternators that are rebuilt sometimes aren't very good.
hi I got the alternator from a local place which reconditions them yah I do strongly believe the issue lies with the alternator, and I did not check part numbers with epc as was told its the correct one.
if you could help me identify which is correct then that would be great
thanks
Well normally you put your vin number into EPC and it will tell you the correct part number for your car. I think for the pre-face lift models, there were several alternators that could fit. If you post your vin, someone could probably look it up for you. Or get a knock off copy of EPC/WIS (dealer repair manual) on eBay and look it up yourself. It's not that easy to use though.
hi I'm unsure on EPC but can provide the vin number which is WDB2110222A898060
if someone can check which part number alternators I can use for my vehicle as I think its deffo the wrong one
many thanks to everyone helping me with this issue
kind regards
@konigstiger thank you so much for the part number much appreciated I will deffo be on the hunt for this correct one as I'm quite certain the one on the car is wrong.
I've managed to fix the dreaded abs/esp issue with the car today as I was strongly concerned about the abs related issue from the driver side front, so headed down to Mercedes and purchased a new abs magnet ring P.N A0259971647 I thought id start with the cheapest option as a new abs sensor was quite expensive .
I cleaned the abs sensor and made sure the new ring was seated properly into the wheel hub as well as regreasing bearings etc and luckily enough the abs light went away.
so I think the "no CAN communication" code was strictly the sensor not getting a good reading from the old ring and not sending correct signal to the esp/abs module. quite strange as when I checked live data the sensor was reading perfectly fine.
I also fixed the red battery message which was a bad battery control module, upon inspection of the old unit I saw some corrosion on the pins that go into the BCM this led to me believing the module has somehow got moisture inside of it. so once that was switched out with a replacement module the code for that as well as the red battery message went away .
the only code that came back was " LIN message from the component (generator) is faulty. Faulty message or timeout". so I will deffo be on the hunt for a new (correct) alternator.
I have read in some other forums that the rear reluctor rings for abs tend to go bad with aging and rust so they will be a preventive maintenance thing to next change on my list
many thanks to everyone who helped me with my nightmare car and hopefully this thread can help others who might have a similar issue.
