The rapid cycling pump sound is coming from the front passenger side. It will only make this odd shuddering noise when in drive and wheels are turned hard right/left. When in park there no noise at all and zero issues with the steering hard right or left.
Not sure how it corresponds but process of elimination. Start simple, need to identify/confirm if SBC hydraulic unit is causing your concern. If so, replacement is covered by extended warranty have MB dealer check it.
Outstanding suggestion. It sure appears that is the area is where I am hearing the sound. It is again a very staccato type pulsing sound. Thankfully it is very consistent with turning the wheel in either direction.
is there anyway to temporarily disengage the SBC unit to help rule out that component?
My steering seems to be functioning completely normal - the steering turning far left or right only seems to instigate the SBC unit. Only on drive will it do this. Never in park.
Im thankful for your insights. I have a Mercedes dealer in town. They could sure look into this and possibly replace that faulty unit if indeed it is causing the issues.
it appears I may have found the fix for this issue. It is the front transfer case that is making the shuddering sound at low speeds when turning. Once the front transfer case fluid is changed the issue will be gone.
This also makes sense because when in park there are zero sounds or issues when turning the wheel.
