HWY, motor oil everywhere smoking no check engine

Hey, wonderful world and friends. I was driving on the highway in the USA and my motor started smoking and there’s oil everywhere under the hood. I got a slow drip now that I’m parked on the left side facing the front of the car.

I’m currently waiting on the tow truck and just wondering if anyone might have an idea what would cause the oil leak without a check engine light? The car still starts and runs good obviously I’m not gonna drive it but there’s oil everywhere.

I suspect oil filter housing and the 2 lines running to/from it. That is the highest point for the oil flow. Might also be the oil cooler below the intercooler or the secondary oil cooler in the passenger footwell

I just posted a video on how to remove the oil filter housing.

Did you recently have your oil changed by a mechanic who cranked down the oil filter cover with somewhat over-exuberance?

negative. The only mechanic that touches my car is precision motor cars in Cincinnati Ohio.

but I will have them check that out. Unfortunately I gotta head back home and I’ll have to call about the car on Monday.

4/3/2024 Update. State Farm towed the car from Marchall, Michigan to Kalamazoo, Michigan. MB said they couldn’t look at it until 5/2/2024.

will update then. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

They could have spared 5 minutes to roll under your car to assure you that you didn't have this guy's problem.

Hi,
tech in Kalamazoo advised the oil filter seal broke.

last oil change was a few months ago at 136,000 miles. Currently has 141,000.
drive to Michigan and back a few times this past few months from Cincinnati, Ohio. About 300 miles each way.

odd that it would break driving down the highway don’t you think?

Is this the seal (the o-ring) that's installed on the plastic oil filter cover?

If it is that o-ring, it can get pinched if the installer doesn’t put a thin film of new oil on it before tightening. Also, in a worst case, if the cap is cross threaded and forced down, eventual failure is almost assured. Ask me how I know.

I've read about over-zealous oil service techs who over-torque the filter cap, and fracture the plastic. I'm not sure how susceptible the cap is long term to heat cycling stress, but I keep a spare in my box of filters just in case.

Could also be the o-ring between the oil filter housing and engine block. Requires a 46 or 47mm socket to replace. Happened on both my W210 and W211 E55s. Nothing quite like crawling under the car and thinking, "Where did all this freakin' oil come from"?
