airmatic question
went out to my '10e550 4matic after the snowstorm here in westchester ny. got about 10" and I hadn't driven it in 24hrs. Back left suspension looked very, very low. When I started the car it went back to normal and seems fine.
I haven't noticed this before. Is it normal for this system? I didn't see anything about it in the manual other than a potential warning indicator that can indicate that you shouldn't drive until the car reaches normal ride height (I didn't get this warning)
My guess is its nothing to worry about but wondering if others have a view.

I would just keep an eye on it to see if this continues to happen or if the air pump is running more often than normal. This could indicate a leak that you might want Merc to take a look at.

Thx for quick reply. That makes sense - I will keep a tab on it. Is there an easy way to tell how frequently the air pump is working?

LI32.22-P-048597 JAN10 vehicle drops at rear axle after standing for a long time “Airmatic – Service Required” damaged sealing rings can lead to a microscopic leak, DAS leak & compressor test will be performed affected air spring will be replaced as required.

Yep welcome to my world. MB tried 4 times to fix that very problem on my car before they bought the car back. Hopefully they find the problem on the first try, keep all receipts. I wouldn't let it stand though, the car should not do it....

I had the same problem yesterday for the first time (have driven ~4K miles) - had parked the car at the airport for 3 days, and when I returned, the right rear was much lower than I expected - crashed air suspension. The suspension, rear right side, inflated properly as soon as I started the engine and put it in reverse.
I will see if it happens again.

We all know that over time and mileage the system can develop leaks (which will be noted on the Start diagnostic) esp if hit with super bad potholes. But that bulletin looks to be a brand new Jan 2010 bulletin(?)

Beyond you lemoning the car, did MB say anything specific about it? Do you think it has to do with assembly at the factory or some new component used in the W212 airmatic system? I'm curious because you'd think the system would be identical to the W211(?) Unless somehow the design of the later suspension has had an affect on the airmatic. It would be interesting to compare VINs on these (ie, a production run.)

Thx everyone for the responses. At this point the issue hasn't returned yet. I'll take it in to get checked out anyway to get this on record given that this seems to be a real issue with the car.
Ultimately this car gets a fair amount of abuse given combo of my driving style and that I drive it in and out of Manhattan on my commute....hopefully it will be up to the task. (my previous car - a 6 series....was not)

Take a picture of the drop with a current newspaper next to the tire for proof. Then send in the car to have it fixed. Don't let it go, it is a problem that should be fixed. I noticed my car started to get weak in the corners and on the highways as time went on- like the car was unable to keep the proper pressure in the bags. Plus, the more people bring their cars in for this, the more MB will finally address the problem...
