"rings" in rear window

When my rear window fogs over, I notice several rings or circles on it. No particular pattern. When window is clear, no rings. Window has been cleaned inside and out.
Asked dealership service writer about it and he replied that it is normal. Part of the manufacturing process and is in the glass.
Anybody ever heard of this? Have owned many cars and none has ever had rings in rear window at any time. Last several have had rear window defoggers.

I have the exact same thing on mine... I figured it was left over residue from the suction cups during the installation or something. I've tried to clean inside and out a few times, but they are still present. Faint, like you say, but definitely there.

I had that problem on my gl-450. I was able to get the rings out by using glass cleaner with a combination of newspaper and handtowels.

I used Girot's Garage Fine Glass Polish to remove the rings. This product is also very good for removing hard water deposits and other junk that seems to adhere to the windshield.

Are you sure you aren't just seeing the quench marks that are in all heat strengthened and tempered glass. They look like rings all over and sometimes shift in color.

What the service advisor said

The service advisor said the same thing when I suggested they were lift ring marks. In fact, he said when he has seen the same thing on other windows in his own MB.
I have cleaned the inside window several times with window cleaners. Outsides get cleaned at least every two weeks-I'm a nut about having clean windows.
Funny I have never seen it in other cars, but guess it is OK.

Maybe this will help explain the phenomenon to you. There's even a photo example: "Typical dot quench pattern seen in a tempered Mercedes automotive back window when incoming light is reflected from the sky, especially when the sun is not directly shining on the glass."

EDIT: pdf file didn't load for some reason. I guess it's too big. Go to Pilkington's (automotive glass for Mercedes, BMW, etc.) website and search for tech bulletin ATS -157 (2007-07-25)

The rings that I removed were from the installation of the glass at the factory. They were visible only when the rear window was fogged up. They did not appear to be quench marks. The glass polish removed all of them.

I have not seen rings in my car but if there are any they probably are from installation "lift sucker cups".

These rings are on the OUTSIDE of the glass (obviously assembly "robot" is on the outside of the car) and will not come off without mechanical, sometimes heavy, rubbing with good window cleaner. They will NOT come off during normal automatic washing and even normal hand washing usually does not remove them.

Doubt they are lift rings as there are at least six and probably more of them. Also, in an odd pattern.
Problem is have only seen them when glass fogged over, which has been rare.
