Do you mean the you have to rev it up very high before the gear changes? Are you driving in "E" or "S" mode usually? Or are you talking about in Manual mode when you manually flick the paddle?

Make sure it's in "S" (if you are truly referring to 1st gear).
Also, try resetting the memory on the tranny (forgot the instructions, but they're easy to find), that is usually the biggest culprit with lagging tranny shifts.

all the other gears engage much more quickly - independent of engine/drivetrain temperatures
wish i could figure this out

'S" means Sports and the manual said if you are using "S" mode, there should be delay in changing gears. I believe "S" doesn't design to use paddle shifter but for when you need 'boost' speed to feel sporty driving. Please find it in your owner's manual. With "E" mode, gear changes faster I believe. I have BMW with 'Manual' mode which lets you choose designated gear whenever you need. I think there are total difference between these "S"(MB) and "Manul"(BMW) modes.

Just had people in the family get 3 new 2011 E350 and 63's.
Two of the 350's have terrible shifting. The 350's feel as if the factory forgot to adapt the transmission during production. On cold starts the slip between shifts badly and once under way the odd shifts are very harsh and cause a thud in the drive line.
The solution often is simply a re-adaptation of the transmission and takes about 1 hr at the dealership with the tech using the Diag software to re adapt the values for how much pressure each solenoid needs to create in the system to complete a given shift.
Take it in and ask that the do a re-adaptation and check the trans fluid level.
Good Luck
