Door lock pins

Ok, probably being overly critical, but have the door lock pins (part that sticks up near window) always been a cheap plastic looking piece? Never noticed until I was looking at the pictures of the E550 designo edition and notices the nice silver pins.

Is this just another cost cutting effort by MB to pull $ out where folks won't notice until they have already made the purchase?

I would love to replace these with shorter ones as well. Whenever I reach out the window I get it on the back of the arm. Do NOT like the stick up 'pins'. Again, my Tahoe has the kind that sit down flush with the door trim but still allow you to pull them up manually if necessary.

My car is set to automatically lock the doors as soon as I move off so I never really see them.

They stick up even after the doors are locked.

I had to go downstair to the garage where I work to check mine out as I had never noticed them.

Mine are the same fluted black plastic lock pins that have been fitted to M-B's in this part of the world for the past 20 years and protrude less than 1/2 an inch when unlocked and sit flush when locked - I always thought this was an antitheft measure so they couldn't be prised up easily.

US models must have different pins to ROW - presumably some regulation going back before the days when doors unlocked themselves automatically during an impact.

Yeah protruding pins would be an annoyance with the windows rolled down.

Yep. Ours stick up about 1/3" when locked. Probably so kids can easily pull up pin. I would think it would be safe if they weren't able to pull up the pin.

Why don't you buy a set of cheap plastic ones like the ROW have.

I can find the part number if you are interested.

The pre facelifted W211 has the classic M-B "sprouting/golf tee" pins that had a little chrome center at the tip. The facelift W211 got the cheaper style pins, and the W212 continues with the cheaper style pins, that probably have something to do with children safety in the U.S and/or cost cutting.

For those of you that have done this mod, did you have to take any other portion of the door panel off to complete the install of the new pins. Have gone back through the post and see reference to issues but not clear on how easy they were to resolve.

I get that the front pins unscrew, and the back ones pop off. The back ones are the concerning set due to the force required to remove / install. I hope I am reading into the posts and this is just a 10 minute job.
