Door lock pins

Is this just another cost cutting effort by MB to pull $ out where folks won't notice until they have already made the purchase?
Mine are the same fluted black plastic lock pins that have been fitted to M-B's in this part of the world for the past 20 years and protrude less than 1/2 an inch when unlocked and sit flush when locked - I always thought this was an antitheft measure so they couldn't be prised up easily.
US models must have different pins to ROW - presumably some regulation going back before the days when doors unlocked themselves automatically during an impact.
Yeah protruding pins would be an annoyance with the windows rolled down.

I get that the front pins unscrew, and the back ones pop off. The back ones are the concerning set due to the force required to remove / install. I hope I am reading into the posts and this is just a 10 minute job.
