oil filter wrench

Did an oil change this past weekend put I couldn't get anywhere near the recommended 25nm torque on the oil filter cap. I used a 76mm 14 flute wrench from autozone which got it snug but then slipped. I used my oem porsche oil filter wrench which got it tighter but still not close to 25nm.

I think it'll be fine but I rather use an appropriately fitting oil filter wrench -- perhaps a deeper socket one. Anyone have success with a different wrench?

btw removing and putting back the underbody panels is the biggest pia for the whole procedure.

I've always wondered about those panels. I suppose they help keep car ride quiet?? I have you thought about Mity Vac where you suck the oil out the dipstick? I use to do oil changes myself but too lazy now with other more enjoyable things to do.

Oil extractors are probably the way to go. I may eventually go that route but my other car doesn't have a dipstick, thus limiting its usefulness for me.

I believe the main purpose of the under panels is corrosion protection with secondary benefits of road hazard protection, aerodynamics and noise.

On a side note, after 80,000 miles, it looked pretty darn clean under there.

Yeah, I used to do all the cars, now I only do one car with my MityVAC as it is the easiest. All the others I just go into the dealer and bring my own oil, runs around 10 bucks for my wife's van

I use an Assenmacher Specialty Tools model M0219 oil filter wrench. It is 74mm with 14 flats. Had no problem torquing the filter cap to 25.5 Nm. Your 76mm wrench is probably just the wrong size.

The Mityvac MV7201 works great for oil changes on MB. The entire job can be accomplished from up top without spilling a drop of oil.

Good Pics, and yep, I also think the MB techs extract the oil from the top too.

Thanks. I've ordered

Assenmacher (ASTM0219) 74mm Oil Filter Wrench - Amazon.com Assenmacher (ASTM0219) 74mm Oil Filter Wrench - Amazon.com

-- assenmacher 0219 oil filter wrench and I'll post back if it doesn't fit. I have the M272 engine but I suspect the filter cap is the same as yours.

So it ends all the filter wrenchs I used worked fine but the ast one is best. The problem was with my torque wrench. Ive now way overtightened the filter cap and cant untighten it!

Im at a loss. Im planning on getting an adjustable wrench and use it wih the ast wrench to simultaneously turn the *******. I feep like a chump but at least Im young and it wont happen next time.

Sorry to hear of your problems ... did you get this resolved? You have to be careful with those micrometer torque wrenches and be keenly aware of the tactile feel in the handle once the fastener reaches the set torque. You also have to return the torque setting to minimum before storing it away after use.

I got it off using a sandpaper trick.
I took a 2 inch wide strip of 60 grit sandpaper and put it on top of the oil filter cap. I then took the ast oil filter wrench at tapped it onto the cap with a rubber mallet. No slipping after that, it came right off. It took another 30 minutes however to get the oil filter wrench off the oil filter cap.

You're right about being aware of the feel of the handle of click type torque wrenches when using low torque.

I ended up getting a CDI torque wrench which seems pretty nice.

Good to hear. CDI makes good torque wrenches; I have one of them too along with several other brands.

I did similar as yours for my three different vehicles but instead of using sandpaper "" and ..., I used a thick rubber band (a strip of inner-tube of bicycles works best) stringing across of the oil filter wrench as a spacer.

I would suggest the same...I use these thick rubber bands wrenches now vs buying varying oil filter cap wrenches. Also, hand tighten the new oil filter should be sufficient torque.

It doesn't take much for the O-ring to seal. Makes it easy coming off as well.
