ticking/knocking noise??

When I start my engine, after sitting in the cold for a while, there is a ticking or knocking noise that happens.

This goes away after 2 or 3 minutes.

Is this normal?

My engine is the 3.5L V6 with 248 hp.

ticking would be oil takes time to enter valve lifters. Knocking is not normal

On cold starts, its normal for a couple minutes, I would check the Service Bulletins sticky. I recall seeing a TSB for engine ticking.

Lot of people have brought this up and MB techs always say it is normal. Mine occasionally does it, but less than a minute, particularly after sitting for a couple of days. Seems longer, but it isn't.
Would definitely consult MB dealership and have it investigated. This would document when you brought it up in case it is something else. Could also be one of the other problems.
BTW, shouldn't the engine be 268 hp?

your sig says 2012 E300 ? if it is the 2012 E350 DI engine then yes it is loud with ticking.

If it is the 96-2011 engine then no, it normally does not tick.

Thanks.

The engine in the new for 2012 E300 is 248 hp.

pre-2012 E350 has 268 hp. and 2012+ E350 is 302 hp.

All direct injection engines (not just MB) makes a click noise due to the high pressure injectors. There is a service bulletin about a loud rattle for a few seconds when you start the car after the engine is already warm and has been off for an hour or so. They will install a oil drain valve. My car is going in for this next month when they do the first A service.

If I let the engine warm up, then shut it off (let' say go to dinner or grocery shop then come back out) start it 45 minutes to an hour later, it will make a very loud rattle for about 5 seconds then go back to the normal ticking noise. On a few occasions its even shook the car pretty violently and then stalled (all within the first 5 to 10 seconds of starting).

So loud rattle for a few seconds is a known issue. If its a few minutes like you say, then maybe you should have the dealer take a look at it. Could be something more serious.

My 2013, after being warm and then sitting for an hour, sometimes has
the tach vary widely, like it's running on 3 cylinders. This will sometimes also shake the car.
Does this sound like the issue? Told my dealer and they said no knowledge of such an issue.
?? What does the oil drain valve do? Is it pooling oil in the crankcase or what,
so crank when started is pushing thru too much oil?
Thanks for pointing this out!

Check the service bulletin in the sticky for details. I think the main purpose is to keep the oil from fully draining down into the pan, so there are some oil in the valves when you start, thus eliminating the rattles.

As far as the car shake, I've experienced the shaking (minor) a number of times. But the violent shake only 2 or 3 times, and the engine would stall when that happens. Not sure if its related to the service bulletin (doesn't mention anything about stalling in the bulletin). but will have dealer check it out and read out anything that is logged in the computer.
