Should I be able to turn the A/C light off?

Should I be able to manually deactivate the AC compressor by pressing the AC light? Dealer says no - that it remains on 24/7 when the climate control system is on-- I thought the manual said you could manually deactivate the dehumidification piece by pressing the a/c button. I press it and nothing happens. If it is constantly engaged I know it automatically cycles the compressor as needed but I am just wanting to make sure my system isn't faulty - on my 2008 CLK I can turn it on and off. I suppose the service advisor at the stealership knows what he is talking about but then again they've been wrong before. I want to have it fixed under warranty if in fact it is not operating properly. I know I'm being **** because the system heats and cools perfectly fine.
On a positive note, I saw this in an older thread, I am having my MY 2011 wood replaced under warranty for the UV fading issue. So if anyone still has this issue dealers are still being helpful. He said it is a $3,500 repair (part is $2,900 which is crazy) here near Washington DC. Glad I had this checked out before warranty expiration.

Push OFF button to turn off entire system. Then you have to push the manual switch for fan or mode. However, that turns AC back on. THEN you can push AC button to deactivate AC compressor and adjust fan or mode using those buttons.
However, heat will still come on if it gets cooler than the temperature setting.

I owned a 2011 model E350 for a year and definitely the AC light went out if I pressed the AC button. If the button was not meant to do this there would simply be no button, period.
Your SA at the dealer should be "coached" for as he denied service work for your car that gets paid by the MB. Instead of telling you the malfunctioning button behavior in normal he should have scheduled you for service work for this.
Good dealer by what you say but you may want to use another SA at this location.
I can 100% say to you that your AC button is not working correctly if it does not cycle the button light each time you press it.

The SA was terrific about the wood trim - so I will give him the benefit of the doubt that I wasn't explaining myself clearly
(although I don't think it is complicated). I will take him to the controls and show him or ask another SA. Where I live there are multiple dealers so I have options if I can't get it fixed at the primary dealer. Bigger question - is this possibly indicative of another issue? That's my bigger concern in all of this - that perhaps the control unit is going bad. If so I definitely want that replaced or fixed before I lose climate control functionality.
