Remove coating on new rotors?

Received my new OE/MB front rotors and pads.

The rotors are coated with a grey, paint like substance - presumably for corrosion protection. Does anyone know it that coating needs to be removed prior to installing the rotors (and pads)?

Thanks much,

Dan

Did a quick search ...

Some conflicting views. No expert - would personally be tempted to remove the coating from the friction surfaces before install.

Interesting to hear from the mechanics.

J.

Thanks for the search results, J, much appreciated. I, too, think it needs to be removed from the sweep area - thus preventing the pads from being loaded up with the stuff. Some fine grit sand paper ought to do the trick.

Off to the garage!

not necessary at all. the pads will burn it off without issue.

there will be no loading up of anything.

I dunno, QC, judging from how badly the sand paper got loaded up with the stuff I have to imagine the pads would too. Maybe it would burn off quickly but I wasn't willing to risk it.

That is correct.
Just install the pads and rotors and let the pads remove the coating. There is nothing that you need to do to get that coating remove, other than to just drive.

I also let the pads rub off the coating. You'll see those rubbery flakes on the edge of new pads.

Also I like having the coating stay on the exposed area around the hub.

I left the coating on everywhere except the pad sweep area and the wheel mating surface of the hat.
