2011 E350 Bluetec vs non-Bluetec Transmission Question Are they the same?

Hello.

My family has traditionally been a Ford family in the 1970s, then Toyota through the 1980s and from the mid 1990s we've transitioned to Mercedes Benz. 1997 ML350, 2003 C240, 2008 C300, 2011 E350 and the 2014 ML350...

I've serviced all of them, plus a few S class, SLK and other non-Mercedes Benz automobiles. I was a service mechanic by trade until 1995. I know the value of good information and having the right tools on hand. The only diesel I've serviced is the 2011 E350 Bluetec, so I do not know too much about them (other than they don't have spark plugs, different compression, requires DEF fluid during start for emissions, ...oh and uses diesel opposed to gas).

My mother's 2011 E350 Bluetec is hitting 30,000 miles. She is elderly and probably drives it once a week. It's never had a transmission fluid service, which from what I can tell is almost a year past due (40,000 miles or 4 years).

I want to perform this service along with others that I am going to perform on it (engine oil service, brake fluid service, coolant service, air filters, fuel filter and so on).

Everything I've read seems to point to the 722.9 or 722.905.

Thank you.

Given the huge added torque put out by the diesel I'd wager that they're certainly not identical. They may be of the same basic design but the diesel's transmission would almost certainly have to have certain key parts that are "stronger".It's also possible that the diesel's tranny requires different fluid, more fluid and/or different service routines.

Just a hunch on my part.

Thank you for your reply.

I found it. I drove to their house and looked at the pan.

It is the 722.9 NAG2+. The newer version of the 722.9 NAG2.

I serviced the transmission and performed it in the same manner as with any other 722.9 Mercedes Transmission, down to the draining of the torque converter.

Torque converter.

Totsubo
Thank you for quick response I had seen in YouTube some procedures how to change tranny oil and filter I think I can follow all the procedures. I am thinking doing also on the torque converter but no idea how to drain and refill the converter can you give me help how to.
Thanks in advance.

I have not performed the fluid service in a couple years, so I am a bit rusty on the procedure. It involves rotating the crank shaft via the bolt on the flywheel until you see the drain plug on the torque converter, then removing the drain plug. Filling involves filling the transmission fluid through the bottom drain bolt on the transmission pan, then turning the car on and shifting through the gears. Then filling it up some more. Then turning it on and shift through the gears some more. Do this until you put the same amount of fluid as you took out. Then, you check the level by getting the transmission temps up to a certain amount and seeing if any fluid comes out of the drain plug.

In order for all this to work, you need to replace the pan gasket, pan bolts, plastic fill snorkel on the pan, fluid filter and a few other things (if you want).

I found the directions on this forum. I do not remember where though. The process is the same as a 2008 C300, 2003 C240 and so on.

Thank you so much for the procedure. by the way this bluetec is my second diesel mb I use to own 99 e300 td mb I did much of necessary services including tranny fluid change and rest. Next move buy tranny kit fluid pump from ECS tuning.

Beware that 7G transmissions changed between the years.
I serviced 2008 and 2014 models at the same time. Ordered filters and gaskets from Husker and they were different parts number.
Out of curiosity I compared the old filters. They seem to have the same shape, but newer transmission has finer screens.
That confirms change of designs as 2008 transmission had recommendation for only service at 40k miles and then lifetime, when in 2014 MB changed recommendation to every 70k.
The ATF changing procedure looks complicated only 1st time.
I had oil pump already, so cheapen out and made adapter to fit the plug. Small pump gave me some exercise, but that is fine.
Right now whole variety of scanners will show ATF temperature, so that is easier too. My garage stays at about 90F, so it took only couple of minutes to get ATF to recommended temperature, I remember it 70C ??
Bare in mind those engines don't like to be turned in reverse when you seek converter plug.
