Checking out this CPO, need help on what to look for
Folks,
I am new here but I have been doing a lot of studies on this forum.
This is my first time venturing into a CPO..... and Mercedes.
My wife and I found one E350 4Matic CPO at the dealer that we would like to check it out. It's about 1.5 hours away.
VIN: WDDHF8JB6EA839187
The information on the website is not very consistent.
Based on the pictures, it looks like the car has a Premium 1 package. Can anyone help me confirm? Also, are there anything we should look for on the transmission and 4Matic? This is going to be our first Mercedes and I have a lot to learn. Our past vehicles have been Japanese.
Thanks in advance

The dealer listing is very specific as to what options are on this car. Look at the options tab or the notes tab. It is a P1 car, but it also has Keyless Go, split seats, lane assist, automatic trunk closer. Nice car, low miles with original warranty remaining and CPO.
Price looks good to me for these options. I personally am not into the 350's, but this looks like a great car. You are missing Parktronic, Distronic, Pano roof and maybe the lighting package, which you may want or don't care about. Distronic is s feature that many love in these cars. It has MB-Tex, not leather and MB-Tex is not s simulated leather.

Thanks KEY08 and konigstiger. Reallly appreciate the information. I don't trust dealer's website 100% of the time; hence would like to confirm with the gurus in this forum. Some dealers even post the same feature/option over and over again so that the vehicle for sale appears to have a long list of options.
Can anyone share approximately how much the extended warranty is going to cost if we decided to go for it? We plan to keep the vehicle for sometime provided it does not have any major issues. We drive (mostly commuting) about 18k miles a year. So, leasing does not work out for us.
Thanks again.

Extended warranty at closing is a ripoff!! The CPO extended warranty they offered me was over 3k. There's a thread in this forum about warranties you can save a ton!

Thanks guys for the info. Great help!. I have been reading the Extended Limited Warranty (ELW) section and learned a lot from this forum. We will probably contact dealer and check out the car end of the month.
Can anyone chime in on how to negotiate (if any) on CPOs? It is easier to find invoice pricing for a new car. I have checked KBB, Edmunds, TrueCar, Cargurus and there wasn't any true "gauge" I could use to obtain the "value" of the car.

I always use Nadaguide. Many insurance companies and even the registry of motor vehicles use it as a guide when determining the value.
The usual method of negotiation works, if you don't like their lowest price, walk out the door. Best price is typically at the end of the month. Walk out the door and call them back a couple days before the last day of the month. My last method of negotiation was to print out the nadaguide sheet and tell the dealer that I like to be between clean trade in and retail, but that didn't work for me as he had it priced above retail and I never heard back from the dealer and they still have it listed at the over retail price. I guess some dealers don't mind waiting for a sucker.
On the extra 2 year CPO warranty, it's probably cheaper to buy from one of the people who post in those threads than to get it from the dealer. I'd suggest asking them to price match, but then I think that wouldn't be fair to those that post in the thread.

On the ELW, make sure it is an MBUSA ELW. Can only be purchased through an MB dealer, but some charge less than others.
You may also want to discuss a pre-paid maintenance plan as part of negotiations.
Look at the Maintenance manual and make sure all services have been performed, especially brakes and transmission if needed.
Incidentally, MB Tex is great and MB refers to it as imitation leather in some of its documents.

Just a note to be clear. What El Cid said is important. The MB ELW is the best and the vast majority of the others either stink or are a pain in the ***. However, if the car is a CPO from a MB dealer, you don't want the ELW (Extended Limited Warranty) you want the extension to the CPO warranty. You can go up 2 more years and UNLIMITED miles and it is cheaper because the first year is included. This is not the same as the MB ELW even though what it covers I believe is.

Although the MB ELW has a limit of 7/100k, you can get some of your money back if you don't end up using all of it. On the CPO, I believe you can only transfer it, but you don't get any money back. When you buy an MB from an MB dealer, it has to have a one year CPO on it in order to buy 2 extra CPO years, but if it doesn't have it, you can't buy the MB ELW unless it's from a non MB dealer. Then you can buy it as long as it has the original left on it.

My understanding is that CPO cars are not eligible for the MB ELW. They can only get an extension of the CPO coverage.
Non-CPO cars still under factory warranty are eligible for the MB ELW. It is the best option if available to you. Before you consider a 3rd party company for an ELW, be sure to check with the service shops you want to use to see if they will work with that company and what their experience is.

Just want make sure I understand correctly, if the MB is CPO, there is no way to purchase ELW and can only extend the CPO warranty up to additional 2 years (with unlimited mileage)? If we plan to keep the car for a long time and put a lot of miles on it, the CPO warranty may not be sufficient compare to 7/100k ELW.

I believe the CPO is supposed to kick in once the original warranty expires. Not sure how they figure that out, I guess once you show up at a shop and the car has over 50k, then they start the clock ticking on your CPO? The regular warranty is 4 years/50k and I think the most you can get under ELW is 7 years 100k so the CPO with unlimited miles might actually be better for someone who drives a lot.

The unlimited mileage is one of a kind I believe. I don't know of any manufacturer based extended warranty with this type of coverage.

Nice ! This makes more sense. Just checked the mbusa.com website and it looks like the factory also offers 2-year maintenance plan for free.

Most people do not realize that there is no special protection with CPO. Your warranty coverage is limited by the previous owners service history. If they did not keep it up by the book, and you have a problem that may be related to a poor service record, it may be a problem. You are buying a used car. Also, be sure all the maintenance has been done by the dealer. Not just by mileage, but also by time...brake fluid, transmission fluid if need be. If maintenance is poor by history, that should help your negotiation.

You might want to call MBUSA customer service and discuss the warranty ramifications of CPO, ELW, etc. on this particular car. After all, MBUSA has final decision as to whether or not something will be covered under warranty.
Incidentally, having services done by an MB dealer helps if warranty issues come up in the future.

For CPO warranty, I believe they go off the in service date + 4 years for the start of the CPO coverage. In essence, the factory warranty limit of 50k becomes irrelevant.

My understanding is CPO warranty starts once factory warranty (4year/50k) expires which ever comes first. Let's say if you hit 50k miles in 3 years, the CPO 1 year warranty with unlimited miles will kick in from there.
In this case, the 2-year extended CPO warranty will cover up to 6 years for the vehicle with unlimited miles.

Read the 2nd and 3rd Stickys on this site. One on service and one on bulletins. May take a while, but a lot of the problems that MB should have fixed show up on these threads.
