2012 e350 oil change and filter question

I need to do my first oil change 10k oil change on my 2012 e350 I recently bought, it has the 276 engine and as per dealer I have OEM oil filter 276 180 00 09 (2761800009) and dealer wants $24 for it. I never seen an cartridge filter that has that plastic thing sticking out, kind of odd. From what I read MANN is no longer an OEM maker of the filter sold on Amazon, and the OEM filter has white wavy material on it also, which is also odd.

Anyone used any other non OEM filter other than above part number, maybe like STP from Autozone for $11, as STP is a typical yellow material filter, I saw it in person, and not wavy white material like OEM, but straight typical lines on the filter I am used to. Dealer is far so if I can get STP and it would work fine, I would rather do that, I used STP on my Lexus before and never had issues, if not, where you guys typically buy these filters? Amazon has a few sellers of these OEM filters for around $20 shipped and Mahle for $19 that looks like OEM. Or are all of you just use OEM and be done with it?

Also, from all the reading I have done, I am confused how many quarts of oil I need to buy to re-fill? some say 7, some 7.5, some say 8.5?! Dealer said 8.5, I will be doing a regular drain from underneath the car at a small mom/pop I have been going to as they do great careful work for $15 when I bring my own stuff, so how many quarts should i buy? I will be buying Mobil1 0w40 from Walmart, they have 5qt jug for $22 and single quarts for $7.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks guys.

P.S.
found a thread on another forum that looks like OEM filter is made by Purflux 276009 part number and its $15 on amazon, looks like OEM to me, anyone uses that one?

2. Mobil1 0w40: On my motorcycle, I used change my oil's viscosity based on the weather and location. So, YMMV. You can research on your own, or wait for others to chime in.

And I believe, for other questions, we could search the forum.
If we have a particular thread with WILL and WILL NOT FIT list of filters, a sticky would be great.

Thanks! I read that too about 6.5qt but since dealer does the suction method I am not sure if its still 6.5 or more. WHen I called my dealer they said its 8.5 so they charge for 9 quarts on oil changes, go figure and book says 6.5..

I pick up M1 0w-40 at walmaet as well. 2 containers.
Here's info on oil filters that I assume applies to your car as well, I get them from rockauto.

No AMG unfortunately, and we'll just leave it as that

AFAIK, the white wavy filter material is the preferred one, over the traditional yellowish paper kind. Search for "fleece filter" on bobistheoilguy and you'll find a lot of hits, recommending this type of filter with the synthetic material.

Yeah, never heard of Purflux. Preferred filters seem to be Fram Ultra (not the cheaper ones though), Wix, Mann etc. The white ones are fleece which is synthetic, the yellow ones are paper and those probably won't last as long. Mobil typically does a rebate twice a year, one just ended Memorial day, but I think the 2nd one starts up in September. It's usually a $12-$15 rebate depending on whether you buy a filter or not. The Mobil filters are also considered decent.

Purflux is who makes the OEM MB M276 engine filters from what I am reading. Found on another MB forum, its $14 vs $24 at the dealer for MB one.

So I am still not sure if I drain and fill instead of suction method, how many quarts it would take so I know how many to bring to the shop anyone know for this M276 engine? thanks.

I have the older M272 engine so not sure if it's the same. Anyway, I only like to buy 5 quart jugs unless the individual quarts are the same price. You'll use it up eventually anyway.

There is a recent thread over on the X204 (GLK) forums about a oil filter damaging the engine. Lots of finger pointing who's to blame. Personally I would buy the OEM Filter. There are vendors here that can take care of you. BTW enjoy your new ride.

HI, I want to do the oil change myself. When I look at the invoices from dealer of my previous oil changes, I see they charged for oil, oil filter, seal ring, solvent. What is this solvent?

I don't know the itemized price, but I'm going to guess it's the stuff they use to clean up the area after the oil change.

Thanks for the quick reply. That's what I thought too, I'll skip it in that case.

I don't know if you can skip it, nor do you want to skip it. Cleaning the area around the drain plug and perhaps a general wipe down in the vicinity is part of the oil change process. I personally wouldn't skimp on such an item, unless they're charging $20 or $30 for a can of solvent you can get for $5. Certainly, when I do my own oil change, I never skip this part.

If it is true that (all) dealers now use the evacuation method, then there is no need for solvent to "clean up the area," at any price. There is no need to remove the drain plug (at all), and the topsider evacuator I use is so efficient, I have not spilled a drop of oil in many years. I can do a dealer oil change in my driveway, using OEM filter and the best Mobil 1 oil for about $50. You won't see any evidence of it on my driveway.

The cost for a dealer to do any oil change is already built into the grossly overinflated price they charge for the service. "Solvents" are a part of their doing business, like paper shop towels, wear and tear on tools, and the embroidered name patches techs sew to their uniforms. To itemize "solvent" on a customer invoice is disgusting.
