Interior HVAC and Command Control Ilumination

Title says it all ... anyone know how to turn on the illumination of the switches of HVAC controls and Command buttons/controls?
Sure, they'll come on automatically based on some calibration-configuration based on something ... but anyway to just turn them on?
Driving into work this morning, dark, gray, flurries ... but just enough light outside (I guess) to keep my interior dark. Seriously?
For the record, switching the Command Display Mode to "Night" doesn't do it.

If you go hard on the headlights(not auto mode) with the headlight switch, the dash and other interior lighting should illuminate, no?

That is a negative. Auto or On setting for headlights has no impact on interior switch illumination during daylight / dusk conditions.
Thanks, though.

Have you tried turning the small knob in the instrument cluster? I think it's under the gas gauge/clock.

That small knob under the gas/clock is simply the gauge cluster dimmer switch. It will not turn the HVAC and Command buttons illumination on or off.
I think I'm beginning to realize ... that Mercedes engineered my 2012 E350 ... without the ability to simply turn on interior controls illumination ... or off for that matter as well.
I'm thinking that's pretty f'in stupid.

I’ve come to same conclusion. There’s a short window of time where my headlights automatically turn on, but the center stack illumination doesn’t come on for a bit. I’ve looked and looked for a button or switch, but no love.

So ... now that we've determined that there is no way to manually control the illumination of the Command and Climate control 'buttons' .... let's ask the next question.
Where is the "light sensor" that controls said illumination?
I thought it might be that little dome shaped bubble in the middle top of the dash close to the inside of the windshield ... but that's not it. I blacked that out (covered it up) with no result.
Any one? I do all of my commuting at twilight time (morning and evening) and it's just light enough for this mystery sensor to turn-off Command/Climate illumination .... but too dark for me to see the controls.
Yeah, I know, I've got them memorized at this point ... but I like having them lit up, you know? Sheesh. Interior lighting, ambience is a big deal, you know? And with the sea of black plastic in these pre-face lift W212's ... a little illumination on the
interior controls makes a big difference.

What happens if you put the ambient light intensity to the max setting?

I just tried adjusting the small knob and it does adjust the brightness of the climate and comand buttons in my car. It is not an on/off in my case - it goes from low to high. The auto headlights were on.
