Mileage: Dallas to N. Carolina and Back

Took 4-1/4 tanks of Premium roundtrip. One tank (of BP) along I-20 yielded my best fuel mileage yet, 35.1 mpg. Eventually we logged 650 miles on this tank... (Picture taken part way through)
On the return trip, we decided to drive straight through from nearly the east coast back to Dallas. Including stops to eat, buy gas, and chinese fire drill among drivers, we got this mileage for 20-1/2 hours driving... (This photo at journey's end)

Store was closed, but the pumps were open. All but the Diesel pump, because there wasn't a diesel pump. Glad I was NOT driving a diesel vehicle.

Let's not get into a running debate about this. I have nothing against diesel, and have contemplated buying one... until I run into situations like this which remind me why I don't. By now, one would think that every station has at least one diesel pump, but no...
Further, I like truck stops, because they turn over their gasoline and diesel stock faster than regular stations, so tend to have fewer fuel quality issues. But you pass 10-20 gasoline stations before you reach a truck stop. At least they now separate the car traffic from the 18-wheeler traffic, so you don't have to waste time in line watching toothless Joe pump 200 gallons of diesel into his big rig. And don't think for a minute that the car and truck traffic is separated for your convenience. My bro-in-law used to be a district manager for a large truck stop chain. He tells me the big rig guys don't want any puny 2-axle vehicles using "their" diesel pumps.

But FYI there are 2 types of truck stops
1. fuel station only where you will find lowest prices for the region.
2. truck STOP, with showers, entertainment and restaurants, in addition of acres of parking where truckers can spend the mandatory days off and fuel is more expensive.
The whole idea of driving diesel is that you fuel when you find good price, not when you run low. With 700 - 800 miles radius you have lot of choices to take.
Coming to San Francisco area, where diesel is almost dollar more than in Las Vegas, I took 4 cans of fuel with me.
This way I will avoid fueling in CA having enough fuel for local drive and return home.
