Model Year Motors

Having bought used back in October ... I am not fully versed in the progression of the series.

I know 2014 Model year was a big technology refresh. One of the largest upgrades mid series ever for MB.

I have the 2011 E550 4 Matic. A very powerful car.

Was the 5.5 Liter bi-turbo called E550 for one or two model years ... 2012 and 2013?

I ask because E550 soon became a 4.7 Liter bi-turbo - was that in 2014?

Or was the 5.5 Liter NA motor still the E550 and 5.5 Liter bi-turbo called the E63?

2011 was the last year in the US for the natural E550. 2012-13 the E550 was the biturbo motor prefaclift. 2014 was the last year of the E550 in the US which was biturbo and facelifted. Those are the most rare models as they were only available for one year.

In 2015-2016, there was the E400 which had just the turbo V6 and 330hp and 350lb-ft of torque vs the 402hp and 443lb-ft in the E550. Gas mileage got better though...

The early years of the W213 (2017+) were pretty stripped down, E300 and E43, but now there's the E450 and E53 options with more power. Probably due to rollback on CAFE mandates.

What build year did the E-350 W212 switch to the M276 (direct injection) from the previous M272?
Is one or the other considered a better motor?

The 2010-2011 E350 had the M272 motor which had 268hp and in 2012-2016 the E350 went with the M276 engine which had 302hp. I would probably have to say the M276 is probably the better engine although I have a 2011. Only drawback on the M276 is the spark plugs which might require the removal of the intake manifold and the dealers charge extra for that at 60k. There are threads on here which claim you can do it without removing the manifold though. On the M272, the intake manifold eventually gets gummed up with deposits and has to be replaced, but that might be later in engine life, maybe in the 100-160k range. Of course extra hp and a faster car is always nicer, I think.

Yes, the face-lifted 2014 E550 was the last available in the US. A 2015 was available in Canada, however (since ChrisB is Canadian).

So the E550 (E500 in Europe) progressed from;
  • 5.5 L normally aspirated V8, model years 2010 to 2013
  • 4.7 L turbocharged V8, model years 2014 to 2016 .... correct?

The E63 AMG was
6.2 L normally aspirated V8, model years 2010 to 2013
And
5.5 L turbocharged V8, from 2014 to 2016 model years ... right?

The E550 was never a 5.5 Liter turbo. Did I get that right?

2010-11 normal aspirated. 2012 introduced the 4.7 TTV8 through 2015. No 5.5 turbo in the 550 ever, correct

So one E550 to another (NA vs Turbo) they are about the same in acceleration performance ... a beast as some say.

My 2011 certainly has a lot of get up & go. Lots of fun!

I have had both the NA E550 and the TTV8. They are both beasts. I prefer the sound of the NA, but you can tune the TT to make 550+HP. Not possible on the NA.
Great cars

MB’s of all kinds.
W212 came with tons of engines.

Here in the USA
2010-2011 Came with the 3.5 V6 N/A and the 5.4 V8 N/A
2012-2016 Came with the 3.5 V6 Fuel Injected
2012-2014 Came with the 4.7 V8 TT
2014-2017 Came with the 3.0 V6 TT

Diesel and Hybrid were offered as well.

AMG Models where a choice of 2. 2010-2011 came with the N/A V8
2012-2016 Came with the 5.4 TT V8.
