Thanks. I usually use my stock BT but was just trying it out and wanted to see if there was something i messed up during install. I’ll just stick to using it for Siri.

You only need the most current update but be very careful to ONLY the CarPlay software. On the Joyeauto website the most current version is dated 2020-3-18.

That is correct. You only need the current one as they include the previous updates.

After you update, lock the car and leave it off for more than 10 minutes. The next time you start the car the current software will be loaded.

That's the same MCU version I have have. I asked Joyeauto this question last month and was told that v0.1 was the current MCU for my cars.

Can’t be done using a computer. You must use a USB key with the firmware on it.

Reach out to Joyeauto support. Maybe they have a workaround to get it out of that state.

Just to close the loop on this thread, I would suggest that anybody considering installing a CarPlay module look for a next-generation unit.

I don't know if Joyeauto will supply one eventually but there appear to be couple different companies offering what appear to be similar, if not identical units. FWIW, I purchased a unit from Road Top (via aliexpress) as the identical unit from Road Top on
amazon.com amazon.com
was more expensive. (It looks like the prices are much closer now. YMMV)

I wanted to try it out in the wife's GL and the installation instructions are essentially identical except for fewer required connections.

IMHO, these newer units have several advantages:
  • Longer, and simplified, wire harness so it's easier to place bundle behind Comand unit
  • Uses MB mic for phone calls
  • No need to wire mic or AUX cables, but you still may need to enable AUX in the Comand engineering mode
  • Unit automatically switches CarPlay to dark mode instead of on a fixed schedule
  • MUCH more reliable wireless CarPlay connection. It "just works"
  • Much more simplified system settings
  • Less expensive
Disadvantages:
  • Road Top does not have a website that I know of, so support may be a consideration, including future firmware updates. That said, this new unit is FAR more refined and polished as it is.

Would it drop-in with the connections for the JoyeAuto harness, such that one doesn't need to take the dash apart again?

Nope.

(That's why I tried it first on the insanely easy X166.)

FYI, the Appcore.enc file is a MCU update while ISPBOOOT.BIN is a normal software update file.

I'm gonna suspect that you may have bricked your unit if neither Joyeauto or your reseller can't help.

I guess yeah that what happened, is it possible to update the normal software from an OTG cable or thats only for the MCU updates?

I know that the MCU update can only be done via the OTG cable but I don't know if the normal software update can use either USB connection as I have always used the USB connection on the wiring harness.

I'm wondering if you dowloaded the MCU file right below that one by mistake? MCU files are *.enc while software files are *.bin.

In a previous post you said you were trying to install appcore.enc, so *IF* it was appcore.enc it was the wrong file.

no i tried to install the normal software file named ISPBOOOT and that lead to infinite black screen, after connecting my reseller he gave me the file named appcore and told me to install it via OTG cable from the Carplay box and still nothing happened

Could it be possible that the file was corrupted somehow? Maybe reformat your thumb drive and download a new copy of the ISPBOOOT file and try again. Maybe try stepping back with an earlier version of appcore. I updated about 20 minutes ago with no issues.
