2015 E400 - Loud Noise at Startup
Recently purchased a 2015 E400 4matic. Upon cold-start, the car makes a real loud sound, almost like a diesel engine. It lasts about 45 seconds and then goes back to sounding normal. If I start it again the rest of the day, it sounds fine. I've had two separate Benz dealerships take a look at it. Both acknowledged that it didn't sound normal, but can't find anything wrong. The second dealership is trying to find a comparable model to compare the cold-start sound. I've attached a video. Any input or thoughts on the sound, would be appreciated. Thanks!

My '15 E350 gasser was making a sound like an exhaust leak or manifold gasket leak. It got a little better after 5 minutes of warm up.
I changed the motor mounts, after only 47K, and that was the problem. It is quiet and smooth again.

Can you post sound from near engine with hood up?
To me sounds like crappy muffler.
Any difference if you rev engine?
At what water temp does sound change to "Normal"?

Umm...isn't that a normal startup for an E400? My 2016 W212 with around 22,000 KM sounds exactly the same on a cold startup - and sounds the same since delivery day (I am the original owner).
Please tell me the sound is normal...(sigh)

Yeah -- that is completely normal. The car sounds like a different animal until the catalytic converter hits a certain temp, then the computer changes things to that ordinary, smooth sound. Also, you will probably note that when the sound is louder and rougher, all the noise seems to come from the left tailpipe. It actually sounds like a hot rod, but only for a moment.
My 2015 E400 (purchased new) has done that since my initial test drive prior to purchase.
Not to worry. If you think the E400 is loud, have somebody start up an E63 for you. . .

My 2015 E400 is exactly the same for a minute or so. I wish it continued that noise... Currently at 34K miles.

Thanks Guys. I have just purchased a 2014 E400 and have also just heard this Cold start noise. So glad to hear it is normal. Though a little surprised and none of my previous Merc have done this....

My W211 was totaled and I’m looking to replace it with a 2015 or 16 E350 or E400. Checking parts prices, etc. and came across that kit. Anyone familiar with it and does it have anything to do with the noises mentioned in the thread?

Interesting info, my tropical year round temperature of 28C as coldest probably allows me to NEVER hear my exhaust that loud.
I thought OP has some sort of sport exhaust.. LOL.

Nope, that kit is for something entirely different than what the OP is asking about. This thread started when the OP asked about a different sound to the exhaust output when the car is started cold. Nothing to do with any mechanical noises, which the belt tensioner kit would address.

I have the same issue with my E400 the dealer keeps telling me they can’t find anything wrong, even replaced the muffler and still no fix. I called Mercedes customer service and insisted the fix my problem since this car is a certified pre owned car under warranty. I told them I want it fixed or they need to buy the car back. It’s been at the dealer for a week already and no update available.
