Transmission Fluid Life Span

Hi everyone, I have two 2016 E350s. I am fleet manager and change my transmission fluid every 70K. I still use a MB Service Sheet from 2014 because I also had two 2014 E350s. I have seen where the recommended interval for a 2016 is now 60K not 70K.

1. Is this true?

The reason that I am asking is I changed my transmission fluid at 64K and I now have 150K. I have gone 86K without a transmission service! Several mechanics have warned me over the years that if you go too long without a service you should not do it because your transmission will fail. I have experienced this myself with a GMC Yukon. The transmission was fine, but after a late service it began to fail.

2. Should I service the transmission or should I leave it alone?

3. How many miles max can you go between servicing?

Thank you,
Dave

1. The 722.9 in the W166 GLE has a fluid service interval of 60k miles

2. Ignore the urban legends. Replace the fluid at your earliest convenience.

3. Follow the manufacturer's specifications. I ran an Aisin / VW 8 speed transmission for 238k miles and it was shifting like crap at that mileage. No service done on that transmission. I ran an Aisin / Toyota 5 speed transmission for 205k miles and it was shifting fine at that mileage. I changed the fluid at 205k miles then sold the vehicle, it was running great when I sold it.

I agree. I would change the fluid now and not be concerned about being over the interval.

And get the Shell ATF 134 FE at a shell distributor. I think it was around $80 or so for a case of 12 quarts the last time I checked.

My mechanic taught me that there's no such thing as lifetime fluid; you can change your fluid every 50,000kms or the equivalent in miles. I used Wurth.

There may be no such thing as lifetime fluids, but there's no need to change it every 50k kms, either.

As others have said, 60,000 is the interval for the 2016s. Change it now.

What kind of fleet has 2 2016 E350s? That's pretty intense mileage.

Buck Horn Limousine in Durango, CO. We have 2 E350s and 2 GL450s. The 350s log about 10K miles per month, the GL450s don't get driven much. Mostly personal use and trail head drops on 4x4 roads in the San Juan Mountains. We have burned through 6 E350s, excellent reliable cars.
