I need help m276 E350 2012
I was trying to replace camshaft adjuster on my m276 E350 2012, i get everything removed and when i was trying to remove the chain tensioner right side, small 10 mm socket fall down between the chain inside the engine and i tried to look for it and i could not found it. Could you tell me how bad is that ...i was thinking to changethe oil but i don't know if the socket got there or not.any suggestions to find that socket. thank you

No good. Get that out of there before moving any further.

I have a Snap-On magnetic probe/grabber that saved my life once when I dropped an oil pump drive shaft into the oil pan of my car. I was able to thread it down and retrive it. Good luck and don't start or roll that motor over until you retrive the socket.

Maybe you get lucky and it’s down in the oil pan... either way you should find it or risk damage.
Endoscope is a great idea. I’m not sure on the M276, but the M272 and M273 have a small access plate that can be removed from the main part of the oil pan.

Try fishing your socket out with a handy telescopic magnet 😎

That's really bad. The FSM states to avoid exactly that. I would suggest a USB endoscope for your phone and get in there and look around. I would advise AGAINST running the engine until it is recovered.
I have used this one for work on my car:

i was trying to take a picture but unfortunately i could not find it went deeper under the chains ... the 10 mm socket for the camshaft holder in place .. i was trying to take a picture it went behind the camera view and deeper
.. so it is not around the chain anymore..do you think it will injure the crankshaft ?

absolutely I would never crank an engine over that has a small tool steel piece floating around anywhere inside.

Ok 10mm bolts for the hold-downs, gotcha. I would remove the lower oil pan next. Hopefully you got lucky and it's sitting in the pan. You might try waving a neodymium magnet near enough to the pan without touching it and try to hear a response from the socket before going to the work of removing the pan. Does that make sense?
yes it make sense thank you for your advices it is really helped me .. i will try that if i could not hear it, i will remove the oil pan, i guess it has many screws .. do you think i will be able to retrieve it if it is not fall inside the oil pan after i remove the pan.. i have tried to find pictures how it look like when the oil pan remove online but i failed, i could not find any pictures for the engine after the oil pan has been removed.. if you can help me with that.
thank you so much

Man, I feel for you. Looks like a tough task. Magnetic wands can be hard to manage in an engine compartment. It seems they have minds of their own and go where they want or where the metal is most dense. There is a need for an electromagnetic tool that allows you to switch the magnet on when you need it and off when you don't, but I cannot seem to find one on the market. I found this video and I plan to make something similar (with LED's and a camera) for this exact situation.
I hope you are able to get the socket out.
