Spare tire's valve rot - 8 years old
Sharing.............
I searched similar topic but I can't find any.
Anyway, I was doing some sound insulation at the trunk. So naturally I checked my spare tire pressure too.
I usually check my spare tire pressure at least twice a year and extra check before a long trip, example Bali.
So this is a total lost now.
Amazing. Never used, so never exposed to the sun or any heat from actual use yada yada and only 8 years life ?
The AMG Ronald wheel OE to my car, also uses all rubber stem tire valve. I have not check that, but early 2022 I took them OE wheel + new tire to the track for like 16 laps and they are fine.
For my BBS Wheel, I avoid any rubber stem based tire valve, because the exact fear I had of sudden total failure is what made me choose aluminum ones.
Aluminum ones compresses the o-ring, so slow leak can happen as worse case, but never it can fail as dangerous as rubber stem ones.
So you guys out there, please take a look closely at your spare tire valve and you main wheels one , if MB gave you the rubber stem ones.
Drive safe.

junk rubber valve falling apart...
Master Surya: goood catch
MB has solved this problem of cheap spares... they did away with it all together.
Now when you bend a rim or get a nail... you go nowhere.

My original spare tire is on the garage celing rack.
I found a matching used MB alloy wheel which I now use as a spare tire. Same valve as its 4 siblings

It fits perfectly. In fact, I think the wheel floor cover is now sturdier since it is supported better than before. I guess that is a function of what "full size" means: mine has 245/40R18 tires all around

Early warning...
31PSI.... half flat spare 😳
Obviously that wheel leaks pressure.
It's not necessarily bad but good to be aware of since I used last year...
Note to gang: check you spare yearly for 61PSI inflation after the rubber has been renewed - Wearing eye protection has never made more sense

Ok, got my driver to go to tire shop. Me lazy to go for such simple task
Autopsy :
Valve rate of leak, excluding tire to rim super duper micro leak IF ANY.
01. My AMG OE, with the rubber body tire valve. 2-3ish PSI a month.
02. My BBS with ray's alu body valve. 1ish psi a month.
03. This spare tire : if one check it every 6 months, 18 - 20 psi lost seems normal, based on full rubber valve body and that is what I been seeing.

Usually when I used to have full sized spare wheel for other car, I pump as high as allowable by the brand. I carry tire pressure gauge in the car.
So when needed, I release some air. I am no more than 34-35 psi usually as standard need, so 40psi if about what I usually pump to full size spare tire.
I will bring my front AMG OE 8.5J x 18" if I go to Bali as spare, now that I learnt it can fit the spare wheel well
Albeit tire is not PS4, at least I still can speed decent compare to using super skinny scarry 80KM/H max wheel....unless I want to drift for fun...LOL.
My current BBS rear is 255 while front 245 all wheel/rim 8.5J
AMG OE one was 265/35 rear and its wheel/rim was 9J.

specialty item...
Tire shop appointment...
My Acura is getting new Continentals today. I show my spare in the trunk ho the clerk...
he says: this is a Mercedes, right ?
I ask: how do you know ?
He says: Mercs are the only cars that have bad spare stems.
I am definitely in the right place for good tire service.
Guy also said this is a non-standard size and they don't have this valve.
(Amazon or) dealer item ✌️
Now back to tire shop for installation...
Free walk-in installation under 5mn, no Apt - Love this place, always has great service.
Case closed.

Speaking on which last year, I took a mountain forest tour on a tourist coach around Yosemite National Park.
The driver kept on having Mercedes style computer problems: his 8 TPMS tires were giving him goofy values.
Also I found amazing he was using the KeyON/OFF/ON to reboot his coach !!
I said to myself, this must be good-old Bosch equipment nagging.

Anything with low power radio like TMPS sender, in a moving car is challenging....the bigger the car/vehicle and if the receiver is only 1 unit ...hhhmmm.
My GoPro wifi interconnect is okey when engine OFF, but when engine ON and car moving, cuts off always. This is bumper cam I speak of.

I am also shocked, and incredibly, I have a spare matching refinished rim. Guess what I'll be doing with it.
I will never get over how worthless all this "temp spare/run-flat" garbage is. Consumers should never have let the car manufacturers get away with this cost-cutting measure. The automakers should have found other ways to save a negligible amount of weight.
What do you do with a flat in the middle of the night on the Interstate (our superhighways) in winter?

I also get rid donut spare tire when I switch from 18" to 17". I got replica wheel $150 and tire only $80 so it super cheap but perform as well as $240 Michelin. So I might as well buy the 5th for spare and it fit perfectly well.

Outperforming Michelins on ride quality, noise, grip and reliability above 90+MPH for 1+hour is not an easy feat.. I have Continental, so not a Michelin fan boy by any means

My spare tire air valve blew out the last time I used it, thankfully it was in my driveway when it went. I recommend W212 owners get it replaced proactively.
