Angry Pano roof rattle NOT caused by loose bolts?

I just purchased a 2014 E350 with pano roof. When going over bumps, I get a rattle that sounds like I have a stack of dinner plates or terra cotta pots in the car. No popping, no grinding, and it does not sound anything like what you can hear in the video below at the 7-second mark. After doing a little research, I took down the roof liner just enough to access the bolts holding the pano roof down. All of the bolts were torqued down.

I don't know what else to try--can anyone identify another potential cause? FWIW, the noise seems to be coming from the area that separates the moon roof from the panoramic roof, and the rattle is unaffected by the position of the moon roof or the sun shades.

There's lots of other potential causes especially when you're not that descriptive about describing it. First would probably be to take it to a mechanic and see what they can do to diagnose it. There's lots of stuff that can cause a rattle, lots of it is suspension based. Shocks/struts, sway bars, ball joints, sway bar links, motor mounts, etc. You just need someone to check it out. The pano roof is basically a creaking/cracking noise when you go over bumps or ramps at an angle, not really a rattle noise. You could have stuff loose in the dash too. It's very hard to do any kind of diagnostics on a forum, it really calls for someone looking at it in person.

Does the sound sounds like below ?

If so, the source is, read here : BB. Where does that metal to metal noise comes from ? See below....

In order for the headliner to maintain its unique shape for the 2 openings, front seat sky view and rear seat skyview, MB uses thin sheet metal lip as stifener for the cut-out/opening and glued it to the material of the headliner as shown above
The headliner feels like sort cellulose based material. Surely not plastic.

I probaby one day will remove the headliner again and try to place foam pads where the headliner metal lip may touch whatever metal components of the pano roof assy.

UPDATE: It is the rear edge of the moonroof. For some reason I convinced myself that the sound was still there when the glass was retracted/vented, but it is not. Can replicate the sound by pounding my fist on the crossbeam between moonroof and pano glass. If anyone can point me to a fix for this, I would appreciate it.

Did you use loctite when tightening the bolts? There's 6 of them, maybe one got loose again. Very common at the dealership, they don't use loctite and they just loosen again. Used loctite on my years ago and it's still quiet.

My other car (not Mercedes-Benz ) had a rattling roof , I fully opened and closed the sunroof shade and the rattle was gone . You can first try this and then check other things

Hello. I've been chasing a rattle in my 2011 e63 pano roof. The noise my car makes sounds like carrying a plate of dishes when going over rough roads. Turned out to be the wind deflector banging against the pano roof in the front. I layered up some duct tape and put it on the underside of the pano glass in the center of the car. Now the wind deflector hits against the tape and doesn't make the rattle noise any more. I guess mercedes forgot to install the duct tape at the factory!

So when your wheel bolts female thread at the hub get loose from thread damage, I guess you can duct tape it too

The deflector has a spring to keep proper tension when erected ( pano open ) or when pushed down by pano front roof ( pano closed ).
It has also a small leverage arm to hold that spring. Check any of these 2 are broken or loose or whatnot.

Go here to see how the wind deflector is when removed. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175846305068

ABOVE : That fabric like a fish net, its bottom end must be attached to the front small glass. I never removed this wind deflector, so I can't explain the fabric end method to be locked to the small
front glass #100 in EPC at bottom of this post.

Below is what can make the wind deflector loose its ERECTION Inspect the spring and this small leverage arm
You can buy the spring stand alone #120, but not the small leverage arm, which you need to buy the entire wind deflector item no #110

You know, I have to thank you for this post. Because of you, I actually took a visit to Pano Roof EPC and learnt that the seals of the glass edges #210, #220 and #230 can be bought stand alone,
I have always thought it was part of the glass and can't be bought separately.

Still, go and fix you wind deflector properly and don't teach people bad MacGyver method.

I actually solved the problem by putting a small (~ 3 inch) strip of weather seal along the bottom of the front edge of the sunroof. They sell a few different colors at Home Depot so you can get close to some of the paint colors.

Thank you so much for sharing this information! I will check the spring mechanism. I assumed it was not serviceable and only sold as an assy. I'm not really sure if the spring is weak or the rubber seal is not as thick as it was new. The duct tape did resolve the noise for me and was free. I would not recommend tape to fix real car issues, but for rattle repair, I don't see any concern. I am familiar with McGyver, and I will definitely take that as a compliment!
