Snap-On Scanner reveals some scary skeletons??
Hey Guys,
2014 E350 S212 Wagon
I had a CEL coming up and it was saying a O2 Sensor was missing??
I cleared it, drove for a few days, came back on, checked the CEL and its the same error, cleared it again....few days later its back, then it went out, now its back again.
Borrowed a mates new Snap-On scan tool and let it run for about 10mins doing a complete deep scan...freaked me out how many ugly issues its found.
The car is running 100%, would not know its having any issues if the CEL didn't come on.
Here are the codes its diagnosed.
Has anyone had this phantom O2 issue before?
Are these other reported issues worth stressing about?
Thanks in advance,
Cheers!

Was the engine running when you did the scan? Or was it off?
Because the W212, the scan must be done with the engine running. Got similar errors this week, being discussed in a separate thread. Thanks to @CaliBenzDriver for pointing that out

Thanks man I'll try again with the engine running.
Anyone experience the 'missing O2 sensor' code before?
Cheers!

Diagnosing Issue...
Mate, you have got quite a collection of top priority faults.
Near 11.9V, i believe your engine is not running, right?
Make a habit not to strain your battery for extended scanning periods.
Try to learn the generic scanner you're using and how the car you're dealing with tesponds to it.
You wrote that "car runs 100% perfects" yet scanner show hard-faults reports .
How to get your most accurate fault list:

Yes I did just that as covered in my last post, engine ON this time LOL.
I'll drive it for a while and see what comes back, Parktronic I know about as sensor 4 is faulty, Camera etc is from swapping in an Android touchscreen system.
Thanks as always
Cheers

RFK Camera CAN-B faults
you have a beautiful Android touch screen and now camera module reports errors.
Essentially you now have an untested situation.
If you're not using that reverse camera get it off your CAN bus without power. Don't unplug it and let the long line to trunk act as a noise antenna, simply power down camera at fuse if not shared.
We trying to preserve CAN health without busy high retransmit traffic. This is on the busy CAN-B right?
Remotely perfect CAN bus is only good as long as all participants behave nicely else traffic jam delays. A known issue on CAN B with the amazing doors Modules and KeylessG modules.

First you need to make sure if your engine is stratified version or not ?
Read here : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...trol-e350.html
Nox sensor is not oxygen sensor or lambda sensor , it is Nitrogen Oxide sensor.
To see Nox sensor position which is way back behind tranny, this video shows quite well, but this is a 2.2L diesel engine...do take note.
Some reading : https://automotivetechinfo.com/wp-co...and-Tricks.pdf
In the United States, the M276 is a 3.5 liter engine with Homogeneous (DEH) combustion, while in most other markets the Stratified (DES) combustion version was delivered.
DEH operation means that the fuel-air mixture is at lambda = 1 throughout the combustion chamber, while DES has lambda around 1 only in the vicinity of the spark plug.
This lean-burn system reduces fuel consumption, with the disadvantage of increased NOx in the exhaust.
More reading : https://forums.mbclub.co.uk/threads/...ensors.239065/
ADD, check your data card if your car has this option :
920 GASOLINE DIRECT INJ. W/ STRATIFIED CHARGE (DES)
Have fun..............

Why I asked you to check your data card for 920 GASOLINE DIRECT INJ. W/ STRATIFIED CHARGE (DES)
is because the model of the Snap On you use, may not be the suitable scanner to use for certain Mercedes.
So, I worry that the Snap On is reporting a Nox sensor missing, because it assumed Nox sensor is on the car, while your car may not be a Nox version

Aha......you do have DES engine 920 option.
I do not envy you at all , you have a more complex engine + emission system than common W212 M276 3.5 NA.
Here is the UK forum on same M276 engine : https://forums.mbclub.co.uk/threads/...ensors.239065/
Just becareful when buying Nox sensor or Lambda ( wideband 02) sensors.
MB cars maybe sensitive to non genuine MB parts related to emission control, you best do your homework.
Here is someone documenting his own troubleshooting, good reading : https://pilch.uk/e350-mercedes-fault-p0142-o2-sensor/

$1K saving with Italian tune-up
Very well writen UK article that explains the $500USD NOX sensor requires an Italian tune up.
It explains how to read live data and make sense with comparative reasoning of second bank sensors.
If your car keeps coming up with same issue the problem may be electrical. Check PWR+ GND on the heater control, check exposed harness plug for oxidation and pls stop polluting our planet, will ya...
- Say thank you Surya.

I wonder if its possible to delete both these storage tanks and sensors (green dots) replacing with straight pipe and have them coded out?
Maybe something @BenzNinja could take on?

I found this very useful vid on youtube, I'll give this a go first to see if it works.
I have only ever used 98RON fuel in the car so its weird it could be dirty?
I do wind out the engine to redline through the gears sometimes to give it a clean out so its not just running around at 2000rpm or less.

'storage tanks' ? thats the catalytic converters between the red and blue dots, and the pre-muffler aka resonator just upstream of the green dot. bypassing the premufflers will make your car quite a bit louder. I don't know anything about the Nox sensors version, don't think those were used in the USA, but NOX is bad stuff, primary component of smog. The DES version of the engine is higher compression can run at higher power efficiencies, but that can generate excess NOX under various conditions, so the NOX sensor allows the engine management to detect and avoid that... the US version is DEH, and just avoids it all the time via running lower compression.

Well, I followed the videos instructions, soaked the NOX sensors over night, blew them out with a can of throttle body cleaner, wiped them down and let them dry off, cleared the codes added the Lucas cleaner into the tank and filled it up and went for a 40 min highway drive, I punched it a few times up to 210klm/h (130mph) to give it a good clean out, by the time I got back to the city it was amazing how smooth the car idles now, its super quite like the ECO has cut the motor...a few days later since this was done the CEL is still off and the car silky smooth, be good to see if this method works on O2 sensors too?
Interesting side note about these sensors is that the nut is a captive one that spins independent of the sensors?? no more twisted to buggery wiring unlike pain in the *** O2's that are fixed.

O2 sensors use a catalyst like palladium or something, and I don't think it does at all well with contamination.

Do NON NOX engine cars have these EGT Exhaust Gas Temp sensors fitted? Curious why they are so far down steam from the heads??

I don't show either of those on the diagram for my wife's '16 E350 DEH version, the diagrams with them say DES only. Her car just has two pairs of OX sensors, one before and one after the main cat.
