If you see voltage below 12.3 V :
stop driving ASAP!
Find a safe place to park.
Your car needs a reboot now...
Stop the engine ignition (Exit car if convenient)
LOCK the car for it to enter low-power sleep mode...
10mn later resume traveling ✌️
Use headlights:ON to generate a fixed voltage

The car VIP modules on CAN-C got in a jam.
ECU picked up corrupted/missing data that it disliked.
Diagnosing this soft-crash with field tools was a tall challenge ✌️

MB introduced a bug in the BOSCH ECU:
The ECU controlling the alternator output on M276/8 has a potentially costly firmware issue.
Under common conditions the ECU erroneous control causes low voltage disfunctions, batteries and charging system failures.
The fix is a simple 5mn software contribution that I wish i could test...
I did an 8 miles drive today and looked at the voltage. It was around 14.3-14.6 for the entire drive and did not really dip below. The car goes to the dealer tomorrow and I will keep the forum posted for future people searching.

Some MB dealers have especially talented individuals. I hope they perform to your satisfaction.

14.4V is a nice working voltage. The variation between .3 and .6 is not significant. It's the battery sensor that measures precisely how well ECU maintains its voltage control under a 50Amps total load.
No problemo

So no one is gonna tell him about the oil in the harness? Unless I missed a post is the number one fault for ECU issues in the M278/M157 platform.

Do a search on oil in harness. Either engine. The posts are endless. Usually on the camshaft sensors going all the way to the ECU.

I posted pictures on mine (probably the longest one). I just don't have in history.

Oil in harness and cylinder scoring. Possible also timing chain or exhaust valve.

dealer quick inspection

With the voltage issues reported by OP, I don't see the "oil in harness" tale tale signs (timing misfires) -

Simply inspect the connectors or ask for job estimate not a bad idea... but after OP fixed!
-- 4 connectors of VVT solenoid actuators
-- 4 connectors Camshaft sensors
These parts routinely leak oil into the engine harness anyway.

Let's see how fast dealer gets it on the road.
🤞

The Mercedes dealer was excellent and for $245 told me the issue was a loose connector to the fuse box on the drivers side of the engine bay. Not sure how it came loose but that was the fix and all is good now. Thanks for everyone’s input. I will happily spend that for this fix as there could have been so many other things it seems.

this a fantastic fix for a tiny dealer price. This is obviously a well run MB Center to rely on in addition to excellent other shops.
Have them inspect the VVT oil leak situation before it has a chance to flod your harness with engine oil. Replace cam sensors and install pigtails for security.
