15 year service

In October, my 2010 will be 15 years old, but will have less than 50,000 miles on it. The Maintenance Booklet calls for replacing the fuel filter and replacing the coolant for the first time. I last replaced the combination (cabin) filter, brake fluid, spark plugs and transmission fluid and filter in Dec. 2021 at the M-B dealership at 42,000 miles.
I could take it to dealership for the fuel filter and coolant, but that is a two hour round trip and a 3-4 hour wait (at least). There are a couple of independents in the area that I have used for routine services.
Any thoughts? I could just defer it for a couple of years probably due to very low mileage.
Thanks.

coolant just use the drain plug lower left side of the radiator and refill

use the $700 or more you saved on your grand-children if any

I don't recommend postponing the replacement of fluids (in general) that time-out. They end-up loosing their properties over time and stop performing their job as expected. And as mentioned, replacing the coolant is an easy enough job to do it at home or take to an indy shop as it's difficult to screw it up.

As for the fuel filter I cannot provide a decent opinion since my experience is based in a country that has very low quality fuel that is often "tampered" with by the gas stations with the addition of unholy chemicals, making the durability of the fuel system components quite difficult to guess.

Best!

I would drain the radiator and refill it and the overflow tank, 35 dollars, time to pull drivers side wheel liner about an hour, the fuel filter is recommended to be changed at 150k miles, with less than 50k, why? unless your country has bad gas regularly, I see little point. you could change the tranny fluid, it's almost due mileage wise and certainly age wise, I just did both on my '12 with 32k miles.

The fuel filter change-out is major surgery, and likely requires draining and dropping the fuel tank, if it's like my G. If you've been buying quality fuel from filling stations that move a lot of product, it's likely the gasoline has been clean, and that the fuel dispenser filters have been serviced regularly. So with only 50K miles of fuel having been pumped through your system, it's still likely in good condition. If you're really concerned, maybe you can find a shop that can borescope it (like a colonoscopy) to inspect for sediment. Otherwise, I wouldn't mess with it.

Ours are under the rear seat and pretty accessible, but I agree, it's way early.

Under the rear seat longitudinally, but under the floor and accessed from underneath the car, right?

2014 - W212.065 - E400 ( M276.820, 3 liter Turbo) RWD not Hybrid
El Cid,

A good example, probably M272 engine like yours. The fuel pump is not yet a 3 phase motor from the wire count.

.
15 years, dirty or not that flter, replace it anyway.
Here is why :

01. Its paper element glued to the plastic base of the filter ELEMENT maybe too old. Hence the filter is actually not very tight to small debris...as you can see on mine albeit only at 8 years old.
You can read my autopsy report here : https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...er-change.html

02. The small clear plastic hoses, 2 of them which criss-cross between fuel filter at LEFT rear to fuel pump at RIGHT rear get hardened and may loose its good sealing quality.
Since MB design of fuel filter has a return feed to fuel pump called JET PUMP ( venturi effect ) those 2 hoses, one is exposed to about 7ish BAR and that is 105PSI.

8 years old, approx under 35,000KM and a new one

You first must check if your fuel filter and fuel pump lock ring is like the video I linked or different/newer like mine. You need special tool if yours is like mine.
You need to remove BOTH fuel filter and fuel pump, because of that criss-cross clear hoses.
You need to drain your RIGHT side fuel tank which is FUEL PUMP location, as it will have more fuel than the LEFT side which is FUEL FILTER. This is how fuel pump can suck fuel all the time and is cooled by fuel.
Your fuel gauge can not tell the true fuel level at RIGHT side fuel tank, because it uses two fuel level sensors at Left and Right side of the saddle tank and average it out.

All above information , in the link I gave you when I did the fuel filter change.

Good luck............

I just performed a filter change on my 2013 W212. It's pretty straightforward. Make sure the fuel tank has less than 25% fuel left or you'll start spilling fuel.

It's very easy to remove the rear bench (just pull upwards) and check the fittings. If you need the special tool, you can get a cheap one on amazon e.g.
Amazon Amazon
Mind you, it takes a LOT of force to twist this open. And if you endeavour into this journey, make sure to give the top a the fuel tank a very thorough clean before opening things.

Those fluids are like engine oil , you know you should replace it every year regardless of mileage .I would take it to dealer albeit indy shops seem more reasonable in your case but please don't wait longer to replace those fluids . However. as for the coolant by this time it should have been replaced to me

I change my fluids by age as required. But, as I noted the coolant lasts 15 years or 150,000 miles per the M-B Maintenance manual. Since M-B says it is good and they want to sell more and make money for themselves and dealers, who am I to argue.

Thanks to all for the information. Found a couple of YouTube videos on how to do it. Also, online cost estimate of $400-500 by independents in my area. Haven't actually called any yet.

Have done that back in the day, but all my recent cars called for a coolant flush. Considering it is 15 years old, I will go with a flush.
