2007 e320 battery light-Fault code 9081 Signal cable 'Terminal 61' has Open circuit

2007 e320
Water got into my from SAM from a car wash and shorted it out. Starter engaged and stayed engaged until starter burned up and then SAM continued to smolder.
Had SAM replaced and starter replaced. Cranks and runs fine, except Battery light symbol comes on after about 10 seconds at start up, and then ac compressor kicks off.
I replaced alternator, thinking the overload/short had fried the regulator.
Battery light still comes on, ac still kicks off.
Pulled up voltage on dash display, 12.3 at start, climbs to 14.2 , then battery light comes on.
I swapped batteries, nothing changes, not a bad battery.
The 07-09 do not have 2 batteries, like the earlier w211's, the only have 1 battery in the trunk.
Replaced battery sensor...still same problem.
Hooked up to das/star ...code in front SAM
Fault code 9081 Signal cable 'Terminal 61' has Open circuit. (Terminal 61 Implausible) This is a current and stored fault.
From what I have read, terminal 61 is the little wire coming off of alternator, for the computer to detect the charging status.
Does that wire connect in the SAM to the B1 connector, pin#2? I tested the wires and they seem to be connected. I cut both ends and stuck in a jumper wire. There is 12-14volts on the wire now, but does not solve problem.
It seems to me that the wire from the alt. goes somewhere else first. Maybe the wire is shorted somewhere.
A funny side note, I had not worked on it for a few weeks, was waiting on my c4 multiplexer to come. I hooked it all up, cleared the few codes in the rear SAM, tried to clear the terminal 61 code in front sam. Disconnected the B1 connector in the front SAM pulled the fuse next to it and inspected it. Put it all back, cranked the car, and the battery sign did not come on, ac continued to work. Sat there and let it idle for 3 or 4 min. Turned it off, cranked again...........problem returned..and persists.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I swear we've just looked at this w211 already...

Why create so MANY DUPLICATES ??

Facelifted w211 does not have a BCM, it only has 1 battery.

I realized too late that I posted this thread to the w212 forum. I should have posted it to the w211 forum.

Sorry for the duplicates, just trying to start a thread on my issue, not commenting on someone else's.

.... no worries!
Now you see how quickly details can get mixed up.

You're saying: facelift-W211 does not have a sealed battery on the the left side of dashboard??

The original alternator was a Valeo. I replaced it with this Bosch. FCP says it will work, but the Valeo is OE.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mer...r-e320-al0843x

I have read that there are different types of excitation signals, depending on alternator, and that the plug may be the same. It makes me wonder if the bosch is not providing the correct signal.
Has anyone else had this problem?

this link is about main battery having a sensor attached to it.... not regarding MAIN battery being single only.

AUX is used to help ISM shift gearbox into Park when chassis power supply has gone bad.

I was under the impression late W211 has baby AUX in-dash...

I will look into that. I don't think it does. Almost all the info posted on these issues are from 02-06 w211's, so alot of it doesn't apply to my car.

What really throws me about this whole thing is how the issue went away, once and returned. It being intermittent is very strange.
And I posted about possibly having the wrong altenator, but last night I tested the voltage, on the read out in the instrument cluster. 12.3 before crank, while starter is spinning, it falls below 11, when car starts, back to 12.3, then climbs to 14.2. If I disconnect the signal wire from the alt, the alt never engages...it never gets above 12.3.
