Repair Cracked Climate Control Glass

Has anyone repaired the common cracked clear plastic on the climate control? It doesn't look like the plastic is easily removed.

Replace it with what, are you finding just the plastic part sold separately?

Is it cracked, or is there a protective film that is wrinkled? I dont have that climate control so not sure what it looks like in person.

Seems if it is cracked then a used control unit would be the cheapest option.

There is no protective film on the unit. I actually did replace the entire unit with a used one off ebay. There are many part numbers for this and while the used unit works, it does not work correctly. I have a convertible and with the top up, they auto will not provide AC until I select Max AC for a few minutes and then switch back to auto. I suspect either the part number for the climate control is a different number for the convertible or the unit needs to be flashed or coded to work correctly on my car. Anyway, just seeing if it possible to repair my original unit and reinstall.

Hey, I had the same problem. I bought the first panel I saw with the glass intact and replaced it. It's not easy, especially removing the front buttons—the clips can break. I first disassembled the new one and only then tackled the original one to check and know what to pay attention to.

I can't figure out how to get the broken glass off. You took the buttons off? Do you need to do that to get the glass off?

Looks like there are some philips head screws holding the front and back plastic cases together. probably unscrew them and the case splits apart. The electronics are probably just floating in there easily removed. Can probably remove and swap out the buttons at this time. Looks like the glass part is attached/glued to the front part.

Can probably swap out the entire front with any other unit as long as it has the same number of buttons. I see some have 7 buttons and some have 8. Im guessing there are led lights at the top of each button.

I messed with the broken unit last night and there are five 5T Torx screws to remove the back. The circuit board just lifts out. Since I have the same number of buttons and the buttons are in great shape on the ebay unit I installed a few months ago, I am just just going to swap the circuit boards. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I have time. The hardest part of the job is removing the center AC grills. I can never find those tabs inside the grills. I have been using a couple thin rods I have bent to work (poorly). Anyone else have a better idea to get to those tabs inside the grills? Thanks for all the insight.

After unscrewing, gently drill out the welds. Pull out the buttons on the front of the panels. Note: Be careful, as you may damage the latches. You can then remove the glass. The welds are marked in red.

From the instructions in the manual it looks like there is a small panel/trim piece under the radio that comes off to reveal two screws for the top of the ac unit. Is this what you are removing?

I have had that EXACT same unit in four cars now...currently in my 63 it is cracked...as I had to slam on my brakes to not hit an ignorant terrorist with a badge (local cop) and some lumber slid forward and hit it...so, thrust a 2x4 into....quite brittle
