2018 E400 Wagon
E400 Exhaust Valves
Can anyone verify if the trim (Sport vs Luxury) on the 2018 E400 wagon affects the exhaust system? Wondering if the 2018 E400 Luxury will have exhaust valves (and downshift crackles??) as is demoed in this video on an E400 sedan (which is a sport trim as far as I can tell).

I have an E400 coupe. The exhaust sound definitley changes between driving modes. I do not hear any backfire or crackle when I accelerate. But in sport plus mode I do hear some crackle, very subtle, if I lift off the gas while accelerating.

I had watched the video before getting my E400 so I did not watch it before writing my previous post. Have now rewatched the video and what is shown is consistant with what my E400 does.

2018 E400 Wagon
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the coupe only available in sport trim? I'm trying to find out if sport vs luxury has any effect on the exhaust system. The luxury option on the MB site doesn't mention anything about the exhaust, but I'd just be surprised if the 2018 E400 wagon Luxury trim has adjustable exhaust valves.

E 400 exhaust
we own a 2017 E luxury wagon. It has 329 horsepower. The vedio indicates that the 2017 Mercedes has 333 horsepower.
Our wagon does not make the sounds you hear in the vedio.
Your question was about the 2018 wagon so our experience with our 2017 wagon may not answer your question. However, I looked on the Mercedes website and the 2018 United States wagon has 329 horsepower.
I wonder if the Mercedes in the vedio was built for European consumption.
Does anyone know whether European E 400 produced more horsepower and noise?

The HP numbers vary because they are calculated using different standards - DIN or SAE.
The EU E400 produces 245 kW or 333 pferdestarke(PS) or 333 Metric HP.
The US E400 produces 245 kW or 333 pferdestarke(PS) or 329 International HP.

No E class has exhaust valves. On the E 63 they are optional. The 43 series crackles are software induced. The 400 does not have crackles at all. The louder tone on the 43 and 400 on sport plus are mostly due to higher baseline RPMs and its been rumored that are also stereo enhanced. I have an E 43 with the comfort package and can barely hear anything, regardless of setting. Even with the windows down the crackles are barely heard given the wind noise. I test drove a gle 43 and the crackling was silly and continous as if it had eaten bad tacos the night before. BTW I didnt like the GLE 43, unlike the sedan, the AMG parts didnt feel organic at all. After a brief brisk drive I cooked the brakes and the handling was torpid. The GLS 550 that I drove drove a lot better despite being a lot bigger, taller and heavier, in fact the GLS was a blast to drive, powerful in spades and surprisingly agile while maintainig and incredibly smooth ride. Those adaptive sway bars are really, really effective.

In the video (must be outside of US since there's no US-spec E400 sedan offered), you can clearly hear servos opening exhaust valves, and the exhaust note changing outside of the car afterward (not stereo-produced sound).
I'm wondering if the valves are 1) only euro-spec 2) only available on the sedan 3) if Luxury vs Sport line has any effect on them being there.

Again, in the US only available as a 1200 dollar option on the E 63 maybe in the future also on the 43.

Also the presence or absence of an optional exhaust provides zero evidence of whether or not the standard exhaust might or might not have flaps, and thus a changeable sound, as detailed in the two links in the two links I posted.

Wrong. There is also a sport exhaust available on the C43 for $1,250. Clearly listed on the MBUSA page as an option. I have also driven a C43 with the optional exhaust as well as one without it.

You will forgive me, I do not recall ever saying the optional sport exhaust was available on non AMG vehicles.
As for the presence or absence of valves, or flaps, in a standard exhaust, I can believe what I see in a video, what I read in two separate articles by a Mercedes dealer, and what my own ears hear, or I can believe you. I will go with the first option at this point.
But always trying to be open minded, if there are no valves or flaps in my car, why does it crackle only in sport plus and in no other modes? Is there something else that would switch on the crackle in sport plus? And only in sport plus?

your comment that “ there are no valves on any mb period”, which you did not limit to E class vehicles, is why I mentioned the C43.

I have ordered an E63S. I was told that the performance exhaust adds two additional exhaust flaps. I was told there are two flaps on the standard E63S.
I don’t know about the E400 or even the E43.

it's always the same.
