Windshield Heater ... does it work?

My 2018 E-Class has the Windshield Heater option. There's no button to turn it on or off.

Owner's Manual says it starts when you use Max Heat function.

How do you know it's working?

Does it continue heating the windshield when you revert to Auto Heat mode?

As far as I know the windshield heater option just means it blows at max on the windshield
it doesn't actually heat the winshield "internally"

It's the "as needed part" that's nebulous ...

It's the "as needed part" that's nebulous. Yesterday, it wouldn't melt the ice unless I used the Max button, which is cold for the feet.

Too bad they didn't put an on/off switch.

I guess if you switch on "max" it stays on even after a re-start (hence the "automatically as needed" remark)

the way it's mean to work is that you switch it on manually when needed and once you switch it off again the
climate control goes back to the previous settings.

If I understand what you say, it would mean that Max would have to stay on for it to work, which defeats the purpose of an electrically heated windshield that should allow to direct forced heat to the floor instead of to the windshield.

you let "'max" blow until the ice is gone. by that time the cabin should be warm enough to keep the windshield ice free.
but yes it'll use all the hot air for the winshield only

I was thinking freezing drizzle.

I was thinking freezing drizzle, where it would be nice if the electric windshield heater took over. We'll see, but so far not too impressive for Canada weather.

I'm curious...how does this feature work? Does this refer to a heated windscreen (wires in the glass) or duct heater? I ask because I turned on defrost immediately after starting my cold car and within seconds there was warm air blowing on the windshield. Do these cars have electric heaters in the defrost vents? My car had been off for >24 hours and looking at the oil temperature gauge was reading below 80F and I was feeling >90F+ air at the defrost vents.

I've got a car coming with the heated windshield option (as in electric elements within the windscreen). I want to make sure all paid for options are present and correct before signing for the vehicle. How would I do this if the wires are invisible and it's activated via a BAU climate control button?

Bring some dry ice maybe .

Trying to make my question clearer: The Windshield Heater option I was talking about is a Heated Windshield, not forced heated air on the windshield. It's activated when you turn on the Front Windshield Forced Air Defrost.

My question: How do I know if it's actually working when using the Front Defrost button, and if it continues working (after I've turned the Front Defrost off) since there's no actual button to turn it on or off?

I think that much was (or should have been) obvious, on account of forced air directed at a windshield not being an optional extra in any car since 1920!

I guess you can only know if it effectively de-ices your windshield. It stops working automatically after 8 minutes or if the exterior temperatures is greater than 7 degrees Celsius.

I checked again, but indeed nothing is mention in the w213 manual

only managed to find you this: https://mbworld.org/forums/new-s-cla...indshield.html
in the S manual it does specifically say that heating is switched on

See the PDF in post #7 here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w222...ield-w222.html.

Albeit for an S-Class but it's the same system.

They should implement the Magic Vision wipers on the E class too. You would only need the defrost for fog. Check out the video

Nice, but ...

Does this mean that the electric Windshield Heater is turned off when I turn off the Front Defrost to heat the car from the floor air outlets?

This is unfortunate, as it would be nice not to have to turn Defrost on all the time and get cold feet at the same time.

When I ordered this 597 option, I thought it would allow normal heating from the floor outlets while it would at the same time electrically defog and defrost the windshield. Sigh ...

Unfortunately yes, as the assumption is that whilst the screen is fogged / iced up, the absolute priority is to rectify this and any hot air directed at the bottom of the cabin would be better directed to the windscreen.

I do agree that a separate operation would have been sensible to give users the option of having warm feet at the expense of a marginally increased defrosting time...
