Oil specs
I'm about to change the oil on my 2017 E-300 and have a quick question. I've been using Mobil-1 0w-40 European oil in my 2005 R230 Sl-500 and I'm considering using the same in the E-300. I've seen the Mobil-1 Formula M 5w-40 oil recommended for the E-300 among other Mercedes.
My question - what is the difference between M1 Formula M and M1 European other than the viscosity if any and is there a significant difference between the 0w40 and the 5w-40 oils? Can anyone give me a reason to choose one over the other?
TIA, Mike.

In addition to Formula M and European Formula I've found Formula FS 0w40 Mobil 1 which looks to be the same as the European Formula.
I'm sure that they will all do the job but does anyone have any preference?
Mike.

Just my $.02:
I agree they are all about the same and if there is a difference it will be so minor as not to bother: remember you are changing it every year or 7,500 miles with filter, whichever comes first.
My choice would be: whichever is cheaper!

The same for both cars? The R230 is normally aspirated 8 cylinder and the E-300 a 4cyl turbo. The E-3000 specifies MB 229.5 type oil requirement which makes things simple but I can't find the same spec for the SL. Do you know if the SL also calls for 229.5 type oil?

Basically any oil that meets the MB 229.5 spec is fine. Mobil 1 0w40 usually gets pretty good reviews and can be easily had at Walmart for $22.88 for the 5 quart jug and Mobil 1 has a $10 rebate on a 5 quart jug til September 30th so it's the best bang for the buck.

Also with the rebate, it's $12.88 for a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1, vs $15 for Costco oil.

@mikefamig given that you own an SL and are DIYing the oil change, you are likely familiar with the BEVO Mercedes operating fluids website. Look up your vehicle and all the acceptable oils will be listed for you. I would go with the cheapest and most available in your area.
In short it doesn’t matter. As long as it meets the MB spec and is changed in the MB interval.

I'm going to just use the European 0w40 in both.
