Wheels without tire pressure sensor

Hi all,

Im looking to buy some winter wheels for the car and was wondering how the car would react if fitted with wheels that does not have tire pressure sensors.

I couldn’t care less about the sensors - I have never had them before on any car - but I don’t want the car to “complain” about them missing with some warning or sound as I find those things extremly annoying:-)

Reason for asking is that I have found some cheap 18 inch new wheels, complete with tires already on.... so it would be to much/expensive to remove tire, fit sensors and refit tires.

Does anyone have a clue on how the car reacts without tire pressure sensors?

Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Rgds, Jake

The car will complain and there will be a graphic displayed on the instrument panel.
Adding 2 pressure sensors is not that expensive.

Here they cost €200 for 1 and fitting them will probably cost around €50 per wheel - so its about €1000 to add TPS to already bought wheels.

The wheels are €900 including postage...

any chance your could change some system values so the car would not complain?

Is cost the only reason you don't want to buy these? Come one man......it's a Benz!

Wow! In the US a single TPMS sensor costs less than US$30 (about €25). Installation including remounting and balancing a tire costs another US$30. Have you checked Amazon for sensors? They are available for a W213 from about US$80 (generic) to US$300 for a set of 4 OEM replacements.

Buying from Amazon is not an option, I get hit with custom charges and VAT.

I drive a used low range benz with alot of miles... I am not a millionaire. Any expense I can avoid I will avoid. And it might be pennies for you. But paying €1000 for something that I find excessive and no use to me, is money I can spend elsewhere.

My dad drives a Ford with TPS, and he can go without them with no problem...

I agree 100%. I use this exact phrase myself... Here in Texas, people waste their money like crazy, then wonder why they can't have two MBs in the driveway like I do. (And I don't feel obligated to wise them up.}

A compromise... Depending on where the OP lives in Europe, winter tires can be a 2-months a year proposition, or 6-months +. If you are REALLY set on the wheels with tires and need winter tires only a couple months, then you might buy them and deal with the complaints for a couple months (look at it as good incentive to swap back to the all seasons asap). If the complaints are beeps and such, I would not like that, but if it's just a display that can be clicked away from, then the annoyance might not be that bad.

You can do this until you find a more reasonable cost for the sensors locally. I know that VAT and Customs charges are barriers to buying from outside the EU.

I've had TPMS in my cars for decades. I wouldn't be without them because I can keep tires inflated to the correct pressures without needing to manually check them every week. There is nary a week that at least one tire doesn't need a pressure adjustment.

Sadly no, but I think that “friends sending packages” will be just as much taken in for customs checks.
