On a positive note for the 5er, it doesn't have the beaver tooth grill.

When tesla gets sued for putting a speedometer on a screen in the middle of the dash instead of in front of the driver.

They aren’t the first manufacturer to do that though…

Mini have been putting the speedo in the middle for decades, personally, I hate it. Quick access parameters should be right in front of the drivers and the driver should be able to operate most HVAC and radio function without taking their eyes off the road. Touch screens for often used functions are anti-safety minded, unless there is a head up display.

I agree that not having direct access to the frequently used stuff, is a potential distraction. I think the whole design concept revolves around using voice controls to replace what was done earlier using buttons and switches. So the prior hardware oriented stuff, moves to software oriented controls. So with well designed voice controls, in theory, one should not be distracted.

In practice however, even the best voice controlled systems are imperfect at best. But they are getting better by the day. And disregarding any advances in voice recognition technology, displaying the speed etc should always be in the driver’s line of sight, unless they move to full automated driving.

The issue with voice controls is that sometimes conversations are misinterpreted as voice controls. I've had that happen with navigation/destinations.

E300-4matic
The W214, much ado about Plastic!

I’ve been driving MB sedans for 40 years and I currently own a 2019 E350-4matic. The new E’s interior reminds me of a plastic cubicle I worked in back in the 80’s and I wouldn’t trade my 2019 if MB was willing to do a straight swap! The new interior looks like garbage by comparison to my current E. Lots of plastic, lots of gadgets and not worth the price of admission. Turning to the exterior, no more Luxury class model in the USA but it is available in Germany.
The little chrome strip at the bottom of the doors makes a huge difference in appearance but the German designers think it only applies in Europe. It’s supposed to be a luxury sedan Not a 4 cylinder sports car. There are loads of buyers that will buy it just because it’s a MB, but in the case of the new E, the juice just isn’t worth the squeeze. Lastly, thanks to the idiots in DC I don’t believe we will have the option of getting a non-hybrid model, no more reliable gasoline powered engine, they’re forcing mild ev cars on the public. The cost to replace the ev battery will be around $10k after it dies when the warranty ends.
The base price is around $60k USD, put some required options on it and you’re looking at around $70k. Think twice before buying this Lego mobile.

I agree that the W214 interior is a downgrade compared to the W213. The W214 has lost that luxury feel. I'm sure there will be 100s of thousands of people that will love it, but I'm not one of them.

To me, it has more of a 20K-30K car feel. Too flat and plasticy-looking.

Again, JMO. If you like it, cool.

No doubt you are in the glass half empty group. Time may have passed you by for a modern MB. A mild hybrid has been around since 2019 and not an issue on either of my cars. It’s simply a generator starter eliminating all belts making the car more efficient. The new software is in the car but it is not compulsory to use it. Personally I love all these advancements. I doubt thé car has more plastic than your 2019 model and you have the option to upgrade your interior to leather or even better nappa leather. Before making a decision wait to see and drive this car. I am so impressed, I am ordering sight unseen as soon as an allocation becomes available.

I guess disable "Hey Mercedes" and just activate it every time you use it via the voice button on the steering wheel, before MBUX, it is called the LINGUATRONIC button I think.

I agree with this. There were however some teething issues in the early build 2021 model year mild-hybrid cars, which I personally attribute to Covid related supply chain issues. My 2022 version has been absolutely flawless till date. I hear the late build 2021 model year vehicles were also flawless, from a power train perspective. And so does the 2023 model year vehicles.

I think the 48V mild-hybrid system, by eliminating several mechanical belts, also eliminated several potential failure points. The 48V side, also smoothens out the power/torque curve, by adding power/torque into the power flat-spots (where the turbo is still spooling up), giving a continuous and level surge of power/torque, throughout the rpm band. And of course the Inline-6 engine is a buttery-smooth performer by design, which is an added plus.

I really want to believe it is sorted but occasionally it still pops up... https://mbworld.org/forums/glc-class...not-start.html
Hopefully MB really fixes it soon, it is getting frustrating.

Have you sat inside a W214?

That seems to be about the 12V system, that's present in all cars, hybrid and non-hybrid. The hybrid system is a 48V system and I don't think that has failed, since the early 2021 Covid-era glitches.

I had a very similar issue as in the linked thread four times in the first few months on my mid-2022 AT. Wouldn’t start, but eventually would after 15-20 minutes. Mentioned it at the first service but I think they blew it off since there wasn’t a recent reoccurrence. But the drivetrain is fantastic. IMO the next evolution of the ICE. Glad to see it is being carried over to the W214. Anyone who dismisses it hasn’t experienced it.

Not denying it is a good system, but the reliability could be better, I think we are getting there though so that is good.

I think I read a thread on the 12V message popping up when it was indeed the 48V battery sometimes it doesn't show a message at all just can't start, anyways we will know once OP of that thread updates us what really caused it.

No messages when I had the problem. A lot of battery issues with the new SL, too. I do think there is a good chance it is supply-chain related; all of these cars were extensively tested during development, and between the E, SL, and GLC linked above we’re talking about three very different drivetrains.

I believe the 48V mild hybrids were already present in the S-class, for several years, before it arrived into the E-class in 2021.

I am surprised the designers didn't use the stars as the headlights and called it a day, you know, call it the illuminated star I mean.... the star headlight. I am glad they didn't though. Although given their obsession with their own logo, I am not surprised if they come up with such for the facelift W214.
I am going to add that the wireless charging pad also have little stars, attention to detail I would say.

Anyone know if the standard door handles are coming to the USA? I mean, wasn't there spy shots of non motorized door handles or is that exclusive to Europe?

Really hoping they finally get it sorted soon, because it is a good system actually when it is not broken.

That is true, it was on the W222, the 48V system was announced in 2016 (but no detail information was available) and then further announced again with more information available in 2017 as MY18 in some countries in S 450 (367hp) and S 500 (435hp) trims. Think it was first available on the facelift of the W222. https://group-media.mercedes-benz.co...l?oid=22934110

and another article talking about it although not from MB themselves: https://www.drive.com.au/news/2018-m...-not-dead-yet/

Are you sure? At least in North America, to my knowledge, the FL 222 used the hot-v 4.0 TT V8 or TT V6, no mild hybrid. 48v was of course being developed during the time of the FL 222.
