Hmmm a supplier issue, "Ganzhou based Farasis Energy that is known the have recalls for fire issue".

I wonder if MB only chose them for the South Korean market and had a different supplier for other markets,...but still... Why?

Not sure why the news article made it sound like it was a surprise findings.
It was well known that Mercedes bought a 3% stake in Farasis in 2020 - and the whole point was to secure the battery supplies.
I believe most of the Beijing Mercedes plant cars use Farasis battery.
Mercedes did not specify battery source for all their cars, nor did they try to hide it.

For example, this ads for a car from China clearly stated that the battery was from Farasis:

I see, I didn't know that MB used them as a supplier before this thread.

Some may be assembled in Germany, some are made here in the US, depending on whether sedan or SUV. However, I do not believe that any of the US market cars have Farasis batteries in them.

.
I heard that Mercedes is transitioning to lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) batteries that don't enter into thermal runaway until ~520°F.

That sounds nice. Other manufacturers are also figuring out solid state batteries for years now, first proposed on smartphones... still nothing : (
