Brutally cold temperature impact on range

I realize there are other threads discussing the EQS SUV range on both short and long road trips. But I don't think there are any comparing range with the same vehicle with temperature being the biggest difference from one leg of the trip to the next.

I made a 240 mile trip from Philadelphia to Syracuse on Friday in our EQS 450 4Matic SUV. Average temperature was about 12F, 25F when we left and zero F when we arrived in Syracuse. Mileage on that leg of the trip was 1.8 MPkWh.

I charged to 100% during the night with sub-zero temperatures at the hotel. In the morning the iPhone app indicated that the expected range was 171 miles, more than 100 miles less than the 285 mile EPA estimate. I drove the last 90 mile leg of the trip to Rochester in zero degree weather at about 55 mph due to icy road conditions. I was only able to get 1.6 MPkWh which is very close to the 171 mile predicted range. The attached image from the iPhone app indicates 168 miles with 98% charge. This is because a couple percentage points were used to preheat the cabin and melt the ice on the windows. Even with the J1772 plug attached, the charger could not keep up with the power needed to heat the cabin.

Today with 45 degree temperatures for the entire 300 mile return trip we achieved 2.5 MPkWh.

There were no issues with the three EA stations we used over the 3-day trip. The two hotel chargers we used allowed us to charge to 100% and keep the DC charging stops down to one per day. I found two links listing all of the Marriott properties with EVSE destination chargers. Other hotel chains probably publish similar lists.

How is your Norwegian? They just completed an interesting winter test with electric cars. Unfortunately EQS / EQS SUV was not participating, but EQE was.

The route included proper hills:

And temperatures dropped to -22 C (-8 F):

Here are the results, comparing actual distance they could cover with the WLTP promised range:

Thus, EQE could manage 409 km against promise of 614 km, difference of -33%.

The lack of a heat pump likely accounts for some of the drop in range. Without it, the EQS SUV draws more energy from the battery to heat and cool the cabin. Less efficient when only using the battery.

When the EQE SUV hits the road, I'll be curious to see how they fare (with a heat pump) compared to our EQS SUV's. The chart above is interesting and a bit surprising.

In 70-80F weather my 580 SUV registers 280 miles at 100% charge. In the 30F range it drops to 215 miles at 100% charge. Quite a drop….

I see similar results in cold weather. Still, I love this car, best we've owned to date.

At our stage in life my wife and I rarely travel over 100 miles from home so we are ok with the mileage and also have ICE vehicles if necessary. Even our weekend place is only 30 miles from home.

I'm in the same boat, rarely travel more than 30/40 miles a day and we have a 22 RAM pickup if we need need an ICE vehicle. When more EA stations come online or Tesla ever opens their Superchargers to CCS EV's, we'll venture further away.

My entire day's worth of driving is 50-60 miles tops so these fluctuations don't really phase me but I too have seen the range indicator significantly drop these past few weeks

I currently have driven 1300 miles (Florida). 80% charge shows 295 miles. Getting really good mileage in warm weather I guess.

Unfortunately the best way to maximize range in the cold with an EV is to really use the seat and steering wheel heater and minimize the use of the HVAC. Heating the air is inefficient and will use a lot more battery.

This is only necessary if taking a long road trip in the cold weather. We regularly drive to the ski resorts in Summit County through some sub-zero temperatures and utilizing this approach the range hit is minimal. We also start with the car in a heater garage which helps a lot. If your battery has been cold soaking in freezing temperatures the car will use a lot of energy to heat the battery once you start driving. Keeping it plugged in and pre-condition early as possible will help.
