EQS 53 Press Drives Starting

This week AMG is hosting press drives of the new R232 SL and it appears that journalists may also be getting behind the wheel of the EQS 53. January 12th is the SL press embargo so if true for the EQS, expect more news and reviews around then.

The EQE 53 embargo actually ends earlier.

I think the interior will still be nice, it looks like the only thing you really lose out on is some color options and cross stitching but in return you get likely more supportive AMG style seats. Both still have nice and soft napa leather. The EQS 53 interior on the Autogefuel video looks quite nice. That being said, I think the 580 and 450 make the most amount of sense for an "S-Class" segment vehicle, especially since the 580 already handles well and is quick enough as it is. The AMG variants I think will better suit the EQE since its smaller and more agile.

I only like the Neva Grey/Biscaya Blue interior which has the diamond sitiching. On the AMG you only get diamond stitching on the black interior. Wiith the gray, you get a brown dash and lose the quilted leather.

Matter of taste obviously, but when I see the EQS53 above, the interior looks like what I would expect in an E-Class (no quilting, boring color scheme).

Upper end M B interior options have always been puzzling to me…offering what I feel are impractical interiors.

My ‘18 S560 interior is a perfect example - off/white and a lovely medium-dark reddish-brown - but every single area where anyone might normally touch or put his hand, that’s where the off-white leather was used.

No thought whatsoever to maintaining as clean an interior as possible and minimizing maintenance.

Same with the fabric around the forward edge of the front door openings where it’s nearly impossible to keep from hitting it with your shoes entering and exiting the car.

It’s unthinking nonsense.

If the EQXX looks familiar to anyone, that's because its based on the Concept IAA from 2015.

Interesting, thanks for sharing js_cls!
Now I am wondering how much of this actually makes to production ... (compared to EQS)

Not much of this particular car- this is more of a design study. MB will evolve the bubble/blob (I say this as someone with an EQS 53 on order) design after the EVA2 vehicles are out though.

A lot of the Concept IAA came through with the AMG GT 4 door though, so it'll be interesting to see what model tracks most closely to this car.

All that pouring over the car with lights and gloves and they can't see the panel gaps are a mile wide? Must be the desired tolerances, which is awful.

Panel gaps are measured robotically and any gaps that don't meet tolerance are adjusted by a technician as one of the final checks before the car is released for shipment. I have been to this plant several times over the past years and I am always amazed at the professionalism and attention to detail during the manufacturing process.

Yeah I know how it's done, that's not the point. Their tolerances are terrible. Look at the car EQS and EQE, their panel gaps are a mile wide compared to the S-Class that's built in the same plant or any other Mercedes. A CLA has tighter panel gaps and tolerances than the EQS and EQE.

My salesman who gave me my 450 test drive this week told me all the test drive cars were early runs, and that they would all end up being crushed. That’s his exact word - CRUSHED.

Based on that, early judgments would probably be premature.

Yeah that is one the things that contributes to the strange appearance of the front fender panels. Probably one of the reasons that the dark cars look so much better.

This car is what you are setting the benchmark for MB panel gaps by? On a white car, they are very prevalent, regardless of the car. It's hinge/opening points. A gap is required. It's just very evident when it appears like a magic marker on a whiteboard. I feel like I'm on a Tesla Model 3 board.
