2002 G500 build/ restoration/ conversion photo thread

Beautiful work...You have me thinking on this
Sir,
Congrats on a fantastic restoration! Your attention to detail is astounding.
I have read your entire thread..Great stuff, Your Russian connections got me to thinking, so I jumped on to Yandex.com (Russian google competitor) and via chrome translate , I quickly surmised that the Russians have completely reverse engineered the w463 and that they essentially OWN the MB Comand ntg4.5 and newer. That said, after watching Youtube in Russian for a bit, I saw 2001 W463 cars that were indistinguishable, if not better than the 2017 cars being offered here. I found several firms offering a retrofit of the Command 2.0 to bring the truck to NTG online 4.7 or higher with prices ranging from $50,000 rubles to a high of $250,000 rubles. I also found some newer , unlocked ntg 4.5+ w463 command units on ebay for resonable prices with the dash top screen. The next time you speak to your Dol.car friend, do you mind asking him for the website of a reliable shop that could sell a conversion harness and "blocks" for such a thing? I think alot of US people would upgrade their interiors if they new that essentially all the elements of the '17 G could be implemented on a 2002 or newer US truck. Your thoughts on the matter? Again...just a great project!

Thank you
Yes, they love their G-wagons over there in Russia and therefore do some crazy things to them.
Ill ask them if they know of anyone that sells a conversion harness (or if it even exists). Very often, you need to send the actual parts over to them to get them re-programmed / re-wired. Or they will probably want to have the actual car in the shop to do the conversion, because I think its more then just a "conversion harness or a computer block".... but ill see what they say.

Mercedes G500 ashtray body is 98% identical to Mercedes W220 ashtray.
My ashtray had broken mounting points on the front where the screws go in to attach it to the dash. After doing some research, I found out that the body of the ashtray is 98% identical to what you find on 2002-2006 Mercedes S-Class. The wood front is different size, but the rest is almost the same (with one slight difference).
Mercedes actually took the ashtray body from W220 Mercedes, modified it, attached different size wood trim and thats all.
What they did and what I actually did also was grind down the ends of the W220 ashtray where they mounting screws are and then drill new mounting holes for the screws, thats all.
I purchased W220 ashtray for $25 on eBay, took some measurements and filed down the ends to match W463 ashtray. I still need to drill holes and maybe grind it down a little more, but I will do that once I get to installing it.
Here are few photos of my original ashtray with broken mounts and W220 ashtray, modified.

02+ conversions into 13+ are a dime a dozen in the Arab countries. Complete interiors and exterior G63 kits including replica rims with spacers can be done (installed and painted) for around $10k.
Oh this includes the electric gear controller too.

Today I wired a headlight from G63 on to my G500.
After doing allot of research online and gathering all the parts I needed, I decided to tackle it.
Spent couple hours, working on it, checking and double checking it.... then it was the moment of truth : )
I was just hoping I did it all correctly and I was not going to end up with a burned out headlight or something else.... At the end of it all, with a flick of a headlight switch, I had xenon lights )))

Right now since the remaining lights are not connected, I have whole bunch of light error msg's. Its too early to know if there will be any headlight error msg. I don't expect it, but well know more later.

New OEM LED side marker and new turn signal.
I had to replace the side marker plug with a new plug since the original side marker plug that's on my car did not match the new style LED side marker plug.
Resistor was also required in order to get the LED working.

You connect the resistor between Positive and Negative wires.
You then attach it to a metal surface. I will be attaching it to the inner fender, above the steering box.
I used this type of resistor.

I converted all of my side markers to the G63 version as above. Super cheap all things considered to do all of them, and a simple wiring job for the resistors. No problems at all in mine, and plenty of space on the inside of the body panel to adhere them. There is a lot of air circulation, so cooling the resistor is not a problem.
What LED license plate lights did you use?
I love the paint/interior combo! Hoping to retrofit my interior to a black/saddle or similar to yours.

For license plate, I purchased lights from eBay for around $70. There is a bunch for sale on there, different quality.

Slowly working on leather, one piece at a time.
Also wired the passenger side headlight and sidemarker, no pictures since it's the same as the driver side.

Shipping out some switches from W205 / W222 Mercedes to "DOLCAR in Russia" in order for them to re-wired them so they work on my 2002 G500. They have never done this but told me they will try.
I'll update everyone on what the end result will be.

Very interesting. Do you plan on using G Class seats with the air bladder control switches on the inboard side of each seat? Hope you are able to successfully complete the re-wiring. That is really over the top!!
