Urine in my AC!

Any help I can get is greatly appreciated. I have a 2015 under useless warranty near a terrible dealer. I swear after I brought it in for a check engine light this started. Anyone from ny will know, it's the smell of urine you'd find in a subway elevator. It happens when the car sits for more than an hour and will go away after the Ac runs for a minute on cold. I check the drains they seem clear, water does drip out, albeit slowly. Of course this isn't a warranty issue it's 'routine maintenance' at the tune of $400. I'm a handy/willing diy guy so I don't mind unscrewing a few parts. Does anyone know where I can find the evaporator to clean or even check the drain plugs from the top end? Or know where I can find a manual? Thanks!!

I drink a lot of water, it shouldn't smell this bad. I was hoping there was a way to snake a hose somewhere and use an evaporator cleaner, Koot it or Klima clean. I didn't do a heavy blast of air since I don't have access to a compressor but I do know that water is clearing the area because I get a small puddle after using the AC. I don't like calling them, they're that terrible.

Take out and replace the microfilters, before you put the new ones back in you can snake the klima or kool it hose to the driver's side where the evap is located and then spray down these evap coils

Thank you! I was told I couldn't access the coils without a thorough deconstruction of the entire dash. What and where are the microfilters? Also, to the drivers side you mean the drivers side vent on the far left of the vehicle?

watch that video ... then let me know what questions you have

i mean from the passenger side footwell where you will access the microfilters behind the glovebox you will snake the klima or kool it hose to the left through the filter housing deep into the area about where the evap coils are

another useful method is to open the doors, remove the Cabin filters, turn the AC on high (and take it off recirc) with engine running, and using lysol (non-scented is what I prefer) steadily spray in front of the intake vent in the engine bay. It will draw the aerosoled lysol through and kill 99% of the bad stuff.

I have to use it on my Evora if it sits for awhile here in FL due to the AC module design. Works like a charm every time.

only problem is that you will smell the toxic Lysol fumes for a day or two

if you do use Lysol use Clean Linen scent

It's the filters. Replace them.

They store the funky smell, and when the car sits they gas out and you get that burst of foul smell when first starting the a/c back up.

Not if you run it for 5-10 min after you stop spraying, and then let it set. The lysol is an aerosol and will settle after you blow everything out. It is used in hospitals globally so I doubt the fumes of the chemicals itself are that terrible for you...though I agree that I would not want to get in it right afterwards and start driving because of the aerosol. Also use common sense so as to not completely inundate it with liquid.

I've used the einszett klima, and besides being expensive, it did not help at all. The lysol trick works with me every time in the Evora.

Also agree on changing filters first though.

So far so good!

The video was a gold. I was able to get a better look at the workings for the HVAC and figure out where the evaporator core is. Unfortunately it isn't easy to get to and I did not see any microfilters, but now I know enough of where everything is to be able to clean it out. There's still a residue but I think a few more runs with the lysol and kool it arriving this weds may do it.

THANKS!!!

There is a cabin filter, it is under the pass side of the dash. Replace it first, or ideally, pull it out, do the evap cleaning stuff with the lysol or whatever (if you don't remove the filter it will just hit the filter, not go into the fins), and then install the new filter.

?

Could you please guide me to that. I had it apart and only had access to a tube that connected the system to the rear of the car and the passenger side footwell. I removed the little metal clips in the video but could not pull the rest of the *** apart because the other clips were well into the center behind the dash. It seems like I would need to remove the entire center dash to access it, I don't think a simple cabin filter would be so hard to remove? I'll take it apart again and take pictures.

Thanks

This is the view behind my glove box. I'm not sure but the sloppy mess of foam sticking out doesn't look right?

And this is a view underneath w the passenger trim removed. I assume the far left is the evaporator which I can't/don't want to take apart.

That's it. You just need to take out 4 screws

Ok I was able to get that out but it doesn't smell. I gave it a febreeze treatment while it was out. I did however get access to the evaporator this time from under the passenger side. Hopefully this takes care of it.

I don't know much about how and where the smell is coming from, but whenever my truck had bad odor, I'd replace the cabin filter, and that will fix the issue.

Update

So far so good! It's only been a day so fingers cross. I was able to access the evaporator through the passenger side foot area (see pics). This time some brown/yellow nastiness came out of the drain tubes. While I was there I checked the drain tubes and they are not clogged. Hope this helps someone in the future. Thank you all!
