2019 G550 vs/ G63: A Head to Head Comparison Video

Hands down, this video is absolutely the BEST video I have seen to date that gives an extremely thorough, head-to-head, real world driving comparison of the new 2019 G550 vs/ 2019 G63, including on curvy roads, hi ways, and off-road testing. The guy also does an excellent job of comparing the 2018 G63 to the 2019 G63. The differences here are dramatic. I have a G550 on order, but now having watched this video, I am pretty sure I am going to change my order to a G63, and take a big hit on a lot of extra wait time. I'm pretty sure my dealer will go MSRP, with no second sticker.

I was waiting for the off-road segment with the G63, but it didn’t happen.

Does your dealer have any G63 allocations available? When I was shopping back in July, dealers only had wait lists, but no allocations for the G63. My dealer at the last minute wanted to add a $10k mark-up on my G550, but later came to their senses. I was told they will add a mark-up (maybe $30k) to their G63s.

I have done business with my Mercedes salesman for 21 years now (bought my first Merc for my wife in Nov 1997), and he is so great to work with, and I trust him emphatically. I plan to sit down with him next week, and change my order from 550 to 63. I already know it will be a long wait, but IMHO the G63 is just so much of a different vehicle than the G550. Totally a personal choice, of course.

If I were to stay in Maryland where the roads are smooth, the G63 would have a much stronger appeal to me, but I plan to move to Pennsylvania where the roads aren’t that smooth and the off-roading opportunities are much more plentiful. Now that I think of it, if I were to really stay here, I would have replaced my M6 with a AMG GT.

Good point, and I totally agree. I also have no intentions to take a new nearly $200k G63 off road! I live in the Pacific NW, with tons of great off roading opportunities. I plan to get the new Ford Raptor with its all new awesome 7L V8 for such duty. Bye bye twin turbo V6, hello throaty 428! My Ford dealer says he expects he will be writing orders by end of this year, or early next, with deliveries about Fall 2019. I bet I may land the Raptor before my G63 shows up. 😁

We had a 2012 and then a 2014 V-8 Raptor. Awesome!!! So much fun, and shockingly comfortable for long drives! We actually preferred the 2012 over the 2014. 2012 had simpler and easier to use electronics and the A/C was awful in the 2014!! Excited to see your new Raptor when it is delivered!

Where are you getting this Raptor V8 info? I spent all of August on FordRaptorForum trying to decide between the boring V6TT GenII vs the obnoxious V8 GenI for my vacation home. Everyone in the Raptor community were pretty convinced they'd stick with the V6 going forward, even though there were some unsubstantiated rumors that a V8 was going in the 2019. I ended up getting the older and slower, but way cooler V8 (with Roush SC 590hp/590tq) based on feedback from forum members. Just popped over to FRF and nobody is claiming anything has changed since August.

The GenI vs GenII Raptor argument is very similar to the new G vs old G - the new one will be much better, but not nearly as cool.

We should probably move this discussion to the Ford site, as this is obviously not G stuff.

I know this guy and have communicated with him via e-mail. I agree, imo he did the best Gwag comparison. In my further opinion, I would stay with the G550 and do the suspension upgrade. The HP of the 550 is plenty for this vehicle, the G63 and G65 are overkill. Forget the price savings, the G550 properly optioned will do anything the G63 will do and if you get the AMG Line option, it looks almost the same.

I agree with the plenty of power (for most uses), but the AMG should have stronger brakes. If one has any off-roading ambitions, then installing MT tires will probably negate the stronger brakes due to the loss in on-road traction.

Yes, but from what I have observed in many test drive videos comparing the 2019 G550 to the hot rod fast G63 (I admit this is not the same thing as being in the car), it sure looks like if you totally badass tromp on the G63's throttle, it literally snaps your neck and shoves you back in your seat, as it moves from 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds. The exhaust sound in AMG Sport+ mode sounds so phenomenal, too. Now, it isn't like the 550's 0 to 60 time of 5.9 seconds is slow, but hey, 4.4 is really fast! Course, I guess a guy could buy a Dodge Demon, or a Tesla Model S equipped with Ludicrous, and really get his head snapped, given its 0 to 60 time is a heart hammering 2.5 seconds. Plus, you could save a lot of $'s going the Model S route vs/ G63. Don't try dirt tracking with that Model S, though!

The '18 G550 was listed as 5.8s for 0-60 by MBUSA. The '19 is 375lbs lighter and has two extra gears, so it certainly won't be slower. It might be due to the soft suspension, but when I hit the gas off the light in my G550 the front end lifts up a few inches, pushes me back into the seat, and the AMG Package exhaust booms, thus giving at least the illusion of going really fast. I guess I'll need to go looking to a Tesla to get myself calibrated. Once the Tesla owner thinks about the barrels of oil I am burning to race him, he'll back off and let me win, right?
