At least they are talking about more expensive versions, rather than cheapening the model.

I didnt like reading this....
The 50-year-old Swedish executive admitted that Mercedes had discussions in the past within the company about potentially phasing out the G-Class,

I suspect that if an electric version does not sell well there might be a point in time in which the G can get phased out.

"In the past, there were discussions whether we should eliminate the model. The way I see things now, I'd say the last Mercedes to be built will be a G-Class," Daimler CEO Ola Källenius

Seems that Mercedes is committed to the G now, probably due to the high demand around SUVs and it makes for a good halo product. I am sure the electric version will do great (especially in some Northern European countries where taxes are MUCH lower on electric vehicles and places like California where you can get HOV stickers, etc.)

I would certainly be interested in it.

It's true, when the first ML was being built it was supposed to replace the G Class.
That's why it had a body on frame chassis, full time 4WD and a low range transfer case.

I think it would sell just fine. No one uses a G wagen for long range driving. Worst thing would be losing the sound of the V8.

The first GL was supposed to replace the G, not the ML.

Actually no, the ML was the first attempt. The GL was the second.
Good thing the G wagen survived.

I think this is actually a good idea. I don't think they will every electrify the G63, but maybe with the G500. I would buy one if it was electric. The current 14mpg is pretty miserable...
