How much should I be concerned with rust on 2018 G63???

I am in the process of buying a 2018 G63 AMG CPO from MBZ dealer with around 13K miles on it.. The car will be driven in NY and I live near the ocean. Should I be concerned with rust?
I've read some threads that pretty much state that all G wagons up to 2018 have or will have rust issues and will need to be repainted at some point. Is this a common problem?

Also should I do a 3rd party PPI for CPO G63 or CPO is as good as it gets?

I wouldn't let it stop you from buying one. I think if you maintain it properly, garage keep (this is key), and don't leave it exposed to the elements for an extended period of time you should be fine. I see many older G's (20 yrs old or so) in my area (DC, lot's of rain and humidity) that still look fine and show no visible signs of rust. If you are near salt air just keep it clean. We spend a lot of time in the summer at the ocean, I wash down the truck daily to keep the salt air off, but I usually do this with all my vehicles at the beach.

As for PPI, I will let others chime in.

whats considered long term 5 years or longer? 2018s been on the road for at least 2 years now.. means another 3 years left before rust problems start to show up?
I am assuming NY winters will accelerate the process.. Not good.

It's metallurgy is "supposedly" better than pre-2018 (too early to tell) but if you don't want rust get an L405 RR (aluminum)

That's not a bad idea. Also would need to hit the windows. Would ceramic coating the body help?

ALWAYS do a PPI. As for rust proofing, the stuff makes a mess and is a major red flag for resale. During my time working at dealerships, rust proofing was often seen as a method to cover-up existing rust. Wash your truck regularly, grease & torque your suspension and chassis annually. Off-road shops are typically very familiar with doing so.

Pulled a trigger on a low mile 2018 G63 Palladium Silver. Did a PPI. Uncovered a few minor, mostly cosmetic issues. dealer took care of it all. so PPI was definitely worth it. Will get it shipped to NY this coming week. Can't wait.

Congratulations! 2018 Silver Palladium here as well. Personally speaking, one of the best colors for a G. You will love it, enjoy and post pics!

I have a 2016 g550 and obviously the rust issue is of concern. I have been in Miami, Florida for the past five days and so far I have seen about 20 g wagons ranging from 2018 to pre 2015 and so far I have not detected any rust. I have looked closely around the windshield frame as well around the rear windows and body seams. I know that the rust issues are well documented on the G wagons but I wonder if that problem was more prevalent on the earlier years.

I really think if you wash your truck and garage keep it you should be fine. Waxing also is important.
