2021 G 63 - Off Road Tires

Happy Thanksgiving, all. First post here, but have gotten so much good information over the last few months while waiting for delivery. Thanks, it is appreciated.

I know there have been posts on this topic (I have read them all), but I'm hoping to get a definitive answer before placing an order for tires. I have just taken delivery of a 2021 G 63. Factory wheels are 22" Cross-Spoke, and tires are 295/40R22.

I'm hoping to buy the Nitto Ridge Grappler in size 285/45R22. Will these tires work without rubbing? Any other concerns I should be aware of? I am not looking to make any modifications to the vehicle. I know there are very few out there, but am I missing any other more aggressive offroad tires that I should consider?

Many thanks in advance...

On a factory wheel that Ridge Grappler should fit fine with no rubbing. It's not a huge step up in size, so I think it will be fine. There might be an off brand or two in that size that are more aggressive than the Ridge Grappler, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. I'm actually kind of curious to see if a 33" would fit without rubbing if you ran them on the factory wheels with no spacers. I think there is enough clearance between the knuckle and the tire, just not sure if the tire would rub the inner fender liner at the front.

Here it is! Kinda think that bull bar needs to be black, but I'm going to live with the silver for a few weeks and see if it grows on me. Vehicle is exceptional in almost every way. Really love it.

I think most others would agree that you'll be better off with a taller sidewall for off-roading. A 19" wheel with a 275/55R19 tire won't look as cool, but you won't be driving home with dinged wheels. Don't spend your last dollar on expensive wheels if you really plan on driving over small boulders.

Looks great. They sure are nice trucks. The bullbar doesn't look bad in silver, but black might match the wheels better. If you get the bull bar powder coated you will have to take it apart since there are rubber seals/bushings around the tubes where the various pieces go together. Take pictures of how those are installed on each part since there are different sized metal washers that go along with the bushings. When you take it apart you will see what I mean. Also, make sure your powder coat applicator doesn't get coating on the sections that insert at the top of the bar inside each vertical support. Again, when you take it apart you will see what I mean. The tolerance is tight, and if you coat the side that goes into the top section of the outer hoops you will have a hell of time trying to get the thing back together. Also, think about how the pieces go back together. I had to reassemble it about 3 tiimes to get all the pieces to go together in the right fashion. Also, the heat from the powdercoat oven might warp the outer hoops a little bit making it hard to get the bolts to line up just right. A small ratchet strap around the hoop can help pull it closed to line up the bolts for getting it back together.

Pretty sure if 305/45 tires fit then the 285/45 will fit.

I run 285/45r22 studded winter tires on the factory 22 inch wheels and there is no rubbing.

Thanks for the info.

Ftedd- Truck looks awesome! I assume those are Terra Grappler G2s? Trying to make a final decision between those and the Ridge Grapplers. Your picture is super helpful. Both seem like good choices given what I have read.

thank you. Yes, they are G2’s. I like them a lot more than the Pirelli’s that come factory on the amg 22’s. Way better in rain and stiffer/better ride despite the larger sidewall. Non-adaptive suspension.

Made some modifications to the truck. Here is the list:

-Replaced stock Pirelli tires with Nitto Terra Grappler G2s ( 285/45R22XL)
-Powdercoat running boards satin black
-Powdercoat wheels in satin black
-Replaced chrome Mercedes badges around the vehicle with gloss-black
-Replaced chrome bull-bar with black
-Full PPF and Cermic Pro coating as well as ExoShield windshield protection

I'm finding a huge positive difference with the Nitto tires. Major improvement in the rain and snow over the stocks and no noticeable difference in tire roar at speed.

305/45r22 @ 32.8” tall, true M/S with snowflake and mountain on the tires sidewall. No lift, no spacers, no rub. I did pull the very inside of the fender well liner corner tighter using two small holes and a zip tie. I used a heated flat screwdriver blade to make the two holes ( = ) that look like and equal sign. Thread the tie through these so nothing is showing and you get about an extra half inch of wheel liner clearance, no rub.

I like that it’s taller side wall- that’s super important for off-roading over rocks etc. have you done any serious offroading with these yet? I think it’ll rub with wheel articulation.

what exactly did you do again with the zip ties?

nice mods!! What is the speed rating on those tires? On a recent trip last week I hit serious off-roading on the 22” stock pirellis (not recommended) and also hit up to 140mph speeds on the highway stretches ( I have speed delimiter factory option)

I did. There is a small hose I cut and slipped over the line for wear purposes.

Great wheel set up, I’m going to go with this choice as well, maybe on the 20” ATR alloy though. This tyre just looks like a good all round tyre, on road and off road! With regards to tyre pressure sensors, did you have to reorder these or are they just off your original set-up?

Terra Grappler G2 looks awesome! Since seeing zip tie the fenders with Ridge Grappler 305/45R22, I'm curious if Ridge Grappler 285/45R22 will cause rubbing at full turns (without zip tie or mod). Does anyone know?

What's the difference? Let me know what you go and size. Definitely want to change out the tires.

For 22s, seems like 285 would be the way to go

I couldn't find any picture in the forum of oem 22" with 285/45R22 Ridge Grappler. Always curious how it'll look, so I tried my best to photoshopped it myself (not an expert in these things) So far what I heard this is the tallest Ridge Grappler size with no rubbing on 22"
I thought it will lose the aggressiveness of the A/T look but I think it looks okay. Any thought?

Thank you for that picture..

Am I right in saying that the Terra Grapplers are more versatile 60% on road and 40% off road where the Ridge Grapplers are 60% off road and 40% on road?
