Is oil gunk/build up normal on top of the skid plate?

Attached are pictures. I’ve had this issue for 4 years now. The dealer tells me it’s normal.

never drips from there but there is a lot of old oil build up and gunk attached pics

is this normal if not what is there to replace/check

thanks

Why does the dealer think it's normal? Oil leaking out of an engine is by design? If the drain plug is above the skid plate, check to see if the seal washer is missing.

This happened to me.

There was some minor surface corrosion on my front skid plate. I took it off to sand it down and low and behold, there was similar buildup on the inside. I had to take a hammer and flathead screwdriver to remove it...stubborn, stubborn stuff. Good news was, because it was basically hardened oil and dirt, the metal underneath was pristine.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I’m thinking I guess from previous oil changes and just be the design of that plate a lot of dirt and whatnot accumulates and just lives there.

One of these days I will remove it and do what you did as well.

The dealer basically told me during oil changes and other service oil will spill into it. They also claimed it’s not all oil but also dirt and moisture along with road debris that get lodged there.

Unfortunately I always forgot to ask about it when I was getting oil changes done at my independent mechanic.

I also never trust the dealer from them lying to me many times and also breaking and ruining stuff. So anything they say I don’t really challenge but take with a grain of salt.

I'd agree with that. When I change my oil G500 (m113)- it's impossible to not have some of the oil from the pan drain fall into the front skid. It actually holds quite a lot of spilled oil!

But, any oil you're leaking from valve cover gaskets, oil cooler, power steering reservoir, steering box- has the potential to fall into the skid plate too..

Yes, a lot of the "gunk" was dirt, sand, etc. Or at least I think it was. It has a fine granular quality to it, along with the grease and smell of oil.

Well the dirt wouldn't accumulate like that in a sort of solid form without some oil mixed in.....
